Minister in charge of Dakshina Kannada Dinesh Gundu Rao said here on Thursday that youth should study the life and achievement of Mahatma Gandhi, understand his messages.
He was speaking at the Gandhi Jayanti programme organised by the government at Rajaji Park in the city.
Stating that the role of Gandhiji in the freedom struggle was immense, Mr. Rao, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, said that Gandhiji strived to eradicate untouchability and empower women. Students should adopt the principles of Gandhiji, he said.
The Minister said that if all lived cordially violence can be prevented in the country.
He distributed prizes to the winners of district level essay competition organised by the government.
Speaking at the birth anniversary celebrations of Gandhiji and Lalbahadur Shastri organised by the government in Udupi, Yashpal Suvarna, Udupi MLA, said that Udupi shares a bond with Gandhij as he visited the temple town in 1934 during the freedom struggle. Gandhiji addressed the freedom fighters at Ajjarakad and encouraged them. To commemorate his visit, his statue was installed at Ajjarakad and several programmes have since been organised to spread his ideals.
He said that the contributions and thoughts of Gandhiji Shastri remain exemplary. Gandhi united India during the freedom movement, envisioning a nation freed from British rule and moving towards self-reliance.
President of Udupi City Municipal Council Prabhakar Poojary, in his address, stressed that citizens should prioritize cleanliness in line with Gandhiji’s vision.
Mr. Poojary urged people to segregate wet and dry waste before handing it over to civic workers.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner T. K. Swaroopa said that Gandhiji is revered as the Father of the Nation, while Lal Bahadur Shastri gave the immortal call of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”.
Winners of the district-level Bapuji essay competition were felicitated on the occasion.
