If the 2025 MLB season has revealed anything about the Milwaukee Brewers, it is that they cannot ever have enough starting pitchers within their organization. Even before the year started, Milwaukee’s pitching staff was short-handed due to injuries. So decimated were they that, when the regular season began, they had just three starting pitchers on their Opening Day roster: Freddy Peralta, Nestor Cortes, and Aaron Civale.
Of those three, only Peralta is still on the team. The other two were traded during the season.
Prior to the season, Brandon Woodruff, Aaron Ashby, and DL Hall were all sidelined with injuries. Woodruff was still recovering from shoulder surgery that cost him all of the 2024 season (and most of 2023) while Ashby and Hall both suffered oblique injuries.
Furthermore, free agent signee Jose Quintana did not join the team until late in Spring Training and was not ready for the start of the regular season.
The Milwaukee Brewers have used 17 different starting pitchers in 2025
Fortunately for Milwaukee, they have had no shortage of quality starting pitcher ready and able to contribute to their 96-win season. Indeed, their development of pitchers (as well as manager Pat Murphy‘s ability to best utilize them) has played a major factor in the team’s regular season success this year.
Peralta leads the Brewers with 32 starts, and he will make a final short start to end the season today. The pitchers with the second-most starts on the team is Quinn Priester (24), who started the year with the Boston Red Sox organization, and Quintana.
Rookie Chad Patrick is the only other Brewers pitcher with more than 20 starts (23).
Over the course of the past few weeks, especially, Milwaukee has had to dig deep into their organizational pitching depth as more and more starting pitchers have hit the injured list.
One of these pitchers that was called upon for a spot start was Bruce Zimmermann, who was designated for assignment immediately following his outing.
Bruce Zimmermann has returned to the Milwaukee Brewers organization
Zimmermann was originally signed by the Brewers in January of this year. After spending a few months with Triple-A Nashville, he opted out of his contract to become a free agent, hoping to get a shot with a Major League team. However, no offers came and he re-signed with Milwaukee a few days later.
His lone appearance with the Brewers came on September 23, an outing which saw him eat some valuable innings as he went six innings while allowing seven hits, six runs (five earned), two walks, and just one strikeout.
After the game, Zimmermann was designated for assignment by Milwaukee, but cleared waivers. The Brewers announced that he has been outrighted back to Triple-A.
Zimmermann is 8-11 with a 5.64 ERA in his Major League career.
