Ed Miliband has told Elon Musk to “get the hell out of our politics”.
The Energy Secretary, addressing the final day of Labour’s party conference in Liverpool, accused the tech billionaire of inciting violence and spreading disinformation.
Mr Musk regularly uses X, his social media platform, to attack the Prime Minister on issues including mass immigration, the economy and the grooming gangs scandal.
In his speech, Mr Miliband said Mr Musk and Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, were part of a “global network that wants to destroy the ties that bind our communities”.
He said: “I can sum up the threat for you in two words. Elon Musk.
“He incites violence on our streets. He calls for the overthrow of our elected Government, he’s an enabler of disinformation through X. He thinks he can tell us how to run Britain.
“Conference, we have a message for Elon Musk. Get the hell out of our politics and our country.”
Last year, Mr Musk clashed with Sir Keir Starmer after he claimed in the aftermath of the Southport riots that Britain was heading for civil war.
In a comment about the violence on X, Mr Musk said “civil war is inevitable” – a remark that was explicitly rejected by Downing Street, which said there was “no justification” for it.
The entrepreneur accused Sir Keir of a “two-tier” response to the violence and criticised a court’s decision to jail a man who stirred up racial hatred online.
Mr Musk was accused of fuelling the riots after spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories, including a claim that the UK was building detainment camps on the Falkland Islands.
During his brief stint as part of Donald Trump’s White House team, Mr Musk reportedly discussed removing Sir Keir from No 10 before the next general election.
Elsewhere in the speech, Mr Miliband promised to permanently ban fracking – something Reform UK wants to reintroduce as a way to boost the economy.
There is already a de facto ban on fracking in the UK, which was brought in six years ago.
Calling Mr Farage an “ideological enemy”, Mr Miliband said: “We know where they want to go next because they have told us – fracking. Fracking in your communities. Fracking will not take a penny off bills. It will not create long-term sustainable jobs.
“It will trash our climate commitments and it is dangerous and deeply harmful to our natural environment. Friends, the good news is that communities have fought back and won this fight before and will do so again.”
Liz Truss attempted to revive fracking during her short tenure in Downing Street in the autumn of 2022 and a chaotic Commons vote on its return came just before her political downfall.
