Volvo has officially launched the XC70 plug-in hybrid SUV in China, introducing a new model that combines advanced technology, flexible performance, and a total driving range of more than 745 miles.
The Volvo XC70 plug-in hybrid SUV is offered in both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions, giving drivers flexibility for city commutes, weekend adventures, or more rugged off-road terrain. Buyers can choose between two battery configurations: a 21.2-kWh pack that delivers an estimated 72 miles of electric range under China’s CLTC cycle, or a larger 39.6-kWh pack rated for about 132 miles, providing extra range for longer trips or heavy usage.
When paired with its gasoline engine, the hybrid system provides a total driving range of more than 745 miles, making it ideal for long road trips without frequent charging stops or interruptions.
Safety and convenience are key highlights as well – the XC70 uses 24 onboard sensors to power 21 driver-assistance features, including emergency automatic braking, adaptive cruise control for smoother highway travel, and fully automated parking to simplify tight urban maneuvers, helping drivers feel more confident and relaxed on both busy streets and open highways.
Balanced power and quick charging
The Volvo XC70 plug-in hybrid is available with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with electric motors. Output ranges from about 314 horsepower in the standard setup to roughly 456 horsepower in the highest-spec version. In its most powerful configuration, the SUV accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in about 5.3 seconds, offering solid performance for everyday driving.
The battery supports DC fast charging, reaching 80 percent in around 23 minutes under optimal conditions. The XC70 can also supply up to 6 kilowatts of external power, which can be used to operate small appliances or equipment during outdoor activities.
Furthermore, the NPA intelligent pilot assist system is currently available on certain highways in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai regions, with plans to extend coverage through upcoming software updates. The feature supports lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and gentle speed adjustments to make highway driving more comfortable. As the updates are released, the system will gradually become usable on more routes across China.
Volvo to build XC70 in Zhejiang for global distribution
The new Volvo XC70 is available in four different trims, with a standard price range from $57,300 to $68,400, reflecting its position between traditional luxury SUVs and newer hybrid competitors. To attract early buyers, Volvo is offering a limited-time promotional price starting at $37,100.
The Swedish carmaker has also announced that the XC70 will be produced at its plant in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, following the company’s established global manufacturing standards. From this site, the plug-in hybrid SUV is expected to be exported to more than 70 markets.
Pricing is positioned between conventional luxury SUVs and newer hybrid and electric competitors. With this approach, Volvo aims to reach customers in China and abroad who want a premium vehicle with modern technology while staying competitive in the expanding new-energy segment.
