Mike Tomlin Teases Potential Steelers’ Trade Deadline Move

The Pittsburgh Steelers closed out Week 9 with an impressive 27-20 victory over the AFC-leading Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The win was built almost entirely on defensive dominance (five sacks and six total Colts turnovers) and improved the Steelers' record to 5-3 on the season as the NFL hits its trade deadline window. Coach Mike Tomlin was asked Tuesday whether the team would be "shopping around a little bit more before 4:00," and, with a smile, told reporters: "We’ll see what happens. I like shopping." Tomlin has repeatedly described the Steelers as being "open for business" and "buyers" as the deadline approaches, and Tuesday's comments hint that more activity could still be coming. In the offseason, the franchise swung big by trading for wide receiver DK Metcalf and moving George Pickens to Dallas for draft capital, immediately signing Metcalf to a four-year, $132 million extension after the move. Those two trades are the clearest examples that Pittsburgh is going all-in this season to capitalize on its playoff window around aging stars like Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey, T.J. Watt, and Cameron Heyward. Reports indicated that the Steelers were among the teams interested in pass catchers Jakobi Meyers (recently traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars) and Miami Dolphins' Jaylen Waddle. With the deadline formally in play, Pittsburgh has signaled that it's willing to spend draft capital on proven help to keep them atop the AFC North and firmly in the playoff picture. Missing out on Meyers is a definite blow, but keep an eye on the Steelers to remain active leading up to the 4 p.m. ET deadline.
