This is the moment a lucky mum-of-two found out she had won £1 million. Naomi Newton-Sherlock, from Worcestershire , exclaimed: “We can finally get the carpets done!” The 47-year-old was the first winner of property giveaway contest firm Omaze’s monthly millionaire draw. The mum, who is originally from Cambridgeshire, won the cash for £15 as part of her Omaze subscription, and was initially in disbelief. Her win came “totally out of the blue”, she said. Naomi was given the news as she returned from the gym, where she is training for a Sahara Desert 100km charity walk to raise money for The Benevolent Society in November. She said: “It was just a normal Friday night – the last thing I was expecting was visitors, let alone to be told I’d won £1m. “I was simply thinking about going to pick up my daughter and what we were going to have for tea. “When Omaze called I was dubious, but thought maybe I’d won a small prize, I had no idea what it could be. “My husband thought it sounded like a hoax but said, ‘If it’s £1,000, we’re getting a takeaway curry tonight.’ “The next thing I knew, the Omaze team were telling me I’d won £1m. I couldn’t believe it. “I saw the total keep going up and up – as soon as it went past £100,000 I dropped to my knees. Winning £1m is beyond transformational – it’s incredible, utterly life-changing for our family. “I was still shaking when I called my husband to let him know what I’d won – his first response was, ‘Is it tax-free’? – my first thought was we can finally get the carpets done! “Like everyone, we’ve had those chats about what you’d do if you won big, dreaming about all of the amazing things you could do – but you never think it will ever happen to you – and now we can actually make those decisions. We can do anything we want! “We could pay off the mortgage, treat the kids, take a proper family holiday – it’s an unbelievable feeling. “Matt has always wanted to go to Japan to celebrate his 50th, but that’s such an expense we didn’t think was possible – now it is! Our daughter wants a horse… I may have officially run out of excuses now.” Naomi has worked full-time, while Matt has been raising their children, since his business was impacted by the pandemic. She said: “This win takes the pressure off. It puts us years ahead – we already feel lighter – it will make such a massive difference for us, it’s an incredible feeling. “Our neighbours didn’t believe me when I said I was late because I’d just won a million pounds – they were in total shock, but it didn’t take long before they told me I can afford to bring champagne this week!” The only thing Naomi had ever won before was a giant teddy bear at a work raffle – “We’ve still got it,” she said. “It’s all still sinking in, but I won’t forget tonight in a hurry, becoming the first ever Omaze Monthly Millionaire will change everything for us, we’re so excited for this next chapter of our lives.” James Oakes, President of Omaze, said: “Everyone at Omaze is thrilled to be celebrating our first-ever Monthly Millionaire – huge congratulations to Naomi for becoming our very first £1 million winner!
