Midland-area organization awards $20K to MSP victim support program

MIDLAND, MI – The Michigan State Police Emergency Needs Closet has been selected for a $20,000 grant awarded by a Midland-based organization. The grant is being provided by the Midland Area Community Foundation through the Esther and Carl Gerstacker Education and Public Safety Endowment Fund, MSP officials said in an Oct. 28 news release. The Emergency Needs Closet provides victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking with resources for emergencies, including temporary pet boarding, security cameras, door locks, hotel stays, groceries, and replacement cell phones. The program is overseen by MSP Crime Victim Advocate Becky Holm, who is assigned to the department’s Tri-City and West Branch posts. “By offering essential basic needs and personal safety items, this initiative helps restore the survivor’s dignity, comfort, and stability during very difficult situations,” Holm said in a statement. “Through this program, law enforcement agencies demonstrate their commitment to community safety and survivor empowerment.” The grant funds will only be used to support Midland County residents who have an existing case with MSP, the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, or the Midland Police Department.
