Microsoft tests shared audio feature for Windows 11 Insiders

Microsoft has begun testing a new shared audio feature for Windows 11, allowing users to stream audio to two Bluetooth LE Audio devices simultaneously. The feature is currently part of the latest Insider Preview Build 26220.7051 and is available for users enrolled in the Dev and Beta Channels. The shared audio functionality enables two people to listen to the same music, video, or call from a single Windows device, marking a significant step forward in Bluetooth LE Audio integration across the Windows ecosystem. Exclusive availability on Copilot+ PCs At present, the shared audio experience is exclusive to select Copilot+ PCs running Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors, including the Surface Laptop (13.8-inch and 15-inch) and Surface Pro (13-inch), along with their Business editions. Microsoft confirmed that in the coming weeks, the Samsung Galaxy Book5 series powered by Intel Core Ultra Series 200 processors, as well as additional Surface models, will also receive access to the feature. Built on Bluetooth LE Audio technology The feature is powered by Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) Audio, a next-generation wireless standard that enables low-latency, high-quality, and energy-efficient audio streaming. Bluetooth LE Audio also supports multi-stream transmission, which makes shared listening possible without audio lag or desynchronisation. Through this upgrade, users can pair two compatible Bluetooth LE Audio devices and activate shared audio directly from Windows 11 Quick Settings. Compatible devices and setup Currently supported accessories include: Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro Samsung Galaxy Buds3 and Buds3 Pro Sony WH-1000XM6 LE Audio-ready hearing aids To activate the feature, both devices must be paired with the system. Users can then open Quick Settings → Bluetooth → Shared Audio to start simultaneous playback. If the shared audio tile does not appear after updating, Microsoft recommends reconnecting Bluetooth devices, checking for the latest firmware, or restarting the PC to re-enable the option. A step toward inclusive audio experiences By leveraging Bluetooth LE Audio, Microsoft aims to enhance accessibility and shared entertainment experiences on Windows 11 devices. The feature could benefit couples watching a movie together or users who rely on Bluetooth hearing aids for daily tasks. Industry experts note that this addition brings Windows 11 in line with Apple’s shared audio experience available on AirPods and iOS devices, further strengthening Microsoft’s push for seamless cross-device audio integration.
