Micron can afford big shareholder dividends. Why can’t it pay more taxes? (Your Letters)

To the Editor: Regarding “Micron’s tax deal in Clay would save chipmaker $2 billion in local and NY taxes” (Oct. 23, 2025): Based on the Post-Standard’s reporting on the proposed PILOT deal and publicly available Micron shareholder reporting, the proposed total property tax payment to Onondaga County, the school district and Town of Clay will be $1.73 million per year versus shareholder dividends paid out of $515 million per year. Of course, we will see property taxes and sales taxes paid into local coffers, as well, from the workers and other business activity attracted to the county or resulting from wages poured into the county. But it seems like Micron itself could afford more than a mere $1.73 million per year payment to county government and schools when its shareholders are getting 300% greater payout. We residents of Onondaga County are taking a huge risk (environmentally and economically) and will see increasing costs for housing, utilities and I’m sure many other things as a result of this development. Am I off base on how I’m seeing this project from an economic perspective? Are county residents getting hosed by the Micron development? Shouldn’t we deserve to see more dollars going into our government treasuries to offset the prospect of rising costs and need for additional public services?
