Located at 1034 Queen St. in the bustling Kakaako neighborhood, Thyda’s Tacos has been serving hearty Mexican food for the past nine years.
Owner Majed Alabdali and his wife, Thyda, started the business after they relocated from Los Angeles to Hawaii.
“We wanted to make food that is very comforting for us and that we grew up eating,” Alabdali says. “So, we decided to make tacos when we moved here.”
Other items served include burritos, quesadillas and bowls. The truck also sells mulitas, which are 4-inch crispy corn tortillas packed with meat, cheese, onions and cilantro.
The corn tortilla tacos come with meat, onions, cilantro, lime, jalapeños and radish.
Burritos and bowls include rice, beans, meat, pico, onions, cilantro, sour cream and cheese. Quesadillas feature meat, cheese and sour cream.
Avocado can also be added to burritos, bowls and quesadillas for an extra $1.
Every item on the menu is filled with the customer’s choice of asada (steak), barbacoa (beef cheeks), lengua (beef tongue), pollo (chicken) or carnitas (pork).
For those who are seeking a vegetarian option, jackfruit is also available. Prices range from $4 to $14 depending on the item and filling chosen.
Alabdali explains that the company’s goal is to provide customers with good Mexican food and friendly
customer service.
The truck is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.
“We’re just a little trailer on the side of the road,” Alabdali explains.
“Every Tuesday, we do a taco Tuesday special. The tacos are half off,” he adds. “Me, personally, I like the tacos more than anything, but the tacos and the burritos are both very popular.”
Alabdali says customers are encouraged to stop by “if you want cheap tacos on Tuesdays and street-style LA Mexican food” from a small, family-run business.
