The New York Mets know a lack of elite starting pitching was their biggest downfall this season and resulted in them missing the playoffs.
Now, the roster retooling begins, and the organization is exploring all possible options to add to the rotation. Danny Abriano of SNY believes one target for the Mets could be Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan.
“Ryan had the best season of his career in 2025, posting a 3.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP while striking out 10.2 batters per nine in a career-high 171.0 innings,” Abriano wrote. “The big question here is whether the Twins would trade Ryan, who has two more years of arbitration remaining and will be very inexpensive (he made just $3 million in 2025).”
In a recent article, MLBTradeRumors posted arbitration projections for every player who is eligible, and Ryan is predicted to make $5.8 million this season. While it’s almost double what he made this past season, paying under $10 million per season for a front end starting pitcher is great business for any team.
“The Twins can definitely get a haul for Ryan this offseason, and it would behoove them to cash in as they embark on some form of a rebuild,” Abriano added.
Ryan is under team control through 2028 which would mean multiple top prospects would go back to Minnesota, and it’s likely the Twins would ask for one of the three young pitchers in Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat as part of the return. However, David Stearns and Steve Cohen are set on doing whatever it takes to win a championship, and they would be willing to pull the trigger if that is what it takes to get a deal done.
