Mets Urged to Steal Phillies Star in Free Agency Blockbuster

The New York Mets are fighting for a postseason spot, but will soon have to address the holes in their roster.
The Mets have shown they are willing to be aggressive in free agency in the past, and could make the starting rotation a focal point in free agency. Last offseason, the Mets signed Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas. Montas has not worked out, but Holmes has been solid.
Young players have stepped up, but the Mets need a reliable option at the top of their rotation. Sports Illustrated’s Zach Pressnell suggested the Mets go after Ranger Suárez of the Philadelphia Phillies this winter.
“Signing Ranger Suárez away from the rival Philadelphia Phillies would be the perfect solution,” wrote Pressnell. “This would bring the Mets a top-of-the-rotation arm while also stealing a star from a rival. The Mets have the money, and the fit makes perfect sense.”
Suárez has a 2.84 ERA in 24 starts. He was an All-Star last season and had a strong case to be an All-Star again this year. He could transform the outlook of the Mets’ rotation.
The Mets may also be looking for corner infielders this winter. Whether or not they re-sign Pete Alonso could dictate how much money they spend on the rotation. The team could simply rely on Jonah Tong and Nolan McLean to get even better next season and lead the rotation.
However, adding Suárez would give the Mets a proven veteran. If Holmes can continue to be solid and Kodai Senga can return to his pre-injury form, the Mets could be set up well with Suárez.
