Meta accidentally shows its new smart glasses with a display before the Connect conference. A gelacted YouTube video reveals the Ray Ban Display glasses with wrist control and confirms the name of the long-awaited “real” AR glasses.
Leak before great announcement
For this week, Meta plans the presentation of his first smart glasses with an integrated display for the price of rumored, around $ 800. But shortly before the official presentation at the Connect conference on Wednesday, an accidentally published video caused a sensation or robbed the Facebook group the surprise. The “Meta Ray-Ban Display” named “Meta Ray-Ban Display” showed a not listed YouTube video on Metas (visible in the picture at the top left), including the associated wrist controller.
The briefly available material confirms central rumors of the past few months. The glasses have a small color display with about 20 degrees visibility, which is primarily intended to display simple information such as incoming text messages. In the video you can see clear glasses frames with a head-up display and the accompanying bracelet. Loud Uploadvr the video is also said to have shown new Oakley models. The sports glasses based on Oakley’s Sphaera design have a camera positioned in the middle and are aimed specifically at cyclists and other athletes. Control by muscle impulses
The operation is carried out via an innovative wristwearable based on SEMG technology (Surface Electromyography). This bracelet can read electrical signals of the muscles and translate hand movements into inputs for glasses. The leaked material shows, for example, how users can answer messages on surfaces through finger movements.
However, the technical specifications indicate significant weight gain, at least compared to the currently comparable meta models. With 70 grams, the display glasses should become considerably heavier than the current Ray Ban meta-glasses with 50 grams. This additional load results from the additional hardware for the integrated display.
Ray-Ban remains a partner
Surprisingly, the leak confirms that Meta continues to rely on the partnership with essilorluxottica. Originally there was speculation that the glasses would be marketed under another essilorluxottica brand or even without the luxury group. Meta now holds about three percent of Luxottica and has exclusive rights to the brands of the glasses manufacturer for his smart glass technology. The Connect Agenda indicates the announcement of a smart glasses SDK, since three developer sessions mention a “new developer tool from Meta”.
Meta has already started to contact third developers for test applications, especially those with expertise in a generative AI. This development could be decisive for the success of the display glasses. While the hardware specifications appear promising, acceptance among consumers depends heavily on available applications. An open SDK would enable external developers to create innovative applications that go beyond simple notifications.
