Here’s everything you need to know about the Melbourne Cup and how to pick the winner. The barrier draw was completed late on Saturday and it may not have been very favourable for some of the race favourites. Particularly AL RIFFA, the international star who will have to carry the biggest weight in Cup history if he is to win this and has drawn a wide barrier, which could make things even tougher for him now. The forecast is for rain so advice would be to find the horses with the best record on wet tracks. I believe that to be import PRESAGE NOCTURNE & BUCKAROO. Both runners have drawn well and should be coming into this race in good form. PRESAGE NOCTURNE ran a big race in The Caulfield Cup and BUCKAROO comes through The Cox Plate where he came within a head of defeating Star mare VIA SISTINA Tuesday’s Weather Forecast – 18 degrees and rain is forecast Expected Track Conditions – Track will likely be quiet wet with plenty of rain coming in over Sunday and Monday and then as well through Tuesday. Expect the track will be in the soft range and even stretching to a heavy so need to look for horses who like wet track conditions Rail Position – The rail will be in the true position as it was on Derby Day which may mean the inside lanes in the straight may be slightly won ground Mitch Lewis’ Race Selections 6 – PRESAGE NOCTURNE 2 – BUCKAROO 14 – HALF YOURS 21 – RIVER OF STARS BOXED TRIFECTA / FIRST 4 – 1,2,3,6,9,14,20,21 The recent European form of PRESAGE NOCTURNE has been strong enough to win this race but given we are also expecting a wet track, he does appear to be really well suited in the expected conditions come race day. The big run in The Caulfield Cup could really give him the level of improvement to win this race. A wet track is also going to suit BUCKAROO and his form line through The Cox Plate this year is very appealing given recent winners such as VERRY ELLEGANT have taken the same path. He draws a lower barrier this year so likely gets a better run. Half Yours won the 2025 Caulfield Cup. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos via Getty Images) HALF YOURS looks likely to jump as the race favourite. Has a light weight, has a good barrier and can handle a wet track. He will join only a few to win The Melbourne Cup & Caulfield Cup double but he looks to get great set up for the race. RIVER OF STARS was the runner up to HALF YOURS in The Caulfield Cup and again is a runner who likes a wet track. She seems to be in the right order to be winning a race like this. My next pick would be AL RIFFA. He may well be one of the best internationals we have seen in the Cup but has to defy a heavy weight and a wide barrier which may make it tricky. The best of the roughie hopes in the race would be Sydney Cup winner ARAPAHO & winning machine GOODIE TWO SHOES if she can handle the wet track. I am happy to not include MEYDAAN in the race, the wide barrier he has could prove a big test. (1) AL RIFFA (FR) (Trainer: Joseph O’Brien / Jockey: Mark Zahra) Age/Sex: 5YO / Horse Barrier: 19 Weight: 59kg Career Record: 15:5-5-1 Career Prize Money: $2,133,420 Winning Distance Range: 1408m-2816m TAB Fixed Odds: W$8.50/PL$3.20 International raider AL RIFFA is one of the hot race favourites despite the fact he will have to defy history to win the race. If he is to win here, he will do so carrying the biggest weight for a winner in Cup history. He gets this big weight due to his elite class and strong European form which includes a last start win at Group 1 level when he took out The Irish Saint Ledger in September. His trainer Joseph O’Brien knows how to win a Melbourne Cup having rained the winner of the race in 2017 & 2020 and to add, jockey Mark Zahra has won the race twice recently in 2022 & 2023. Despite the fact he must defy history with the big weight, he looks a strong chance given he could be one of the highest level international horses to have contested this race. (2) BUCKAROO (GB) (Trainer: Chris Waller / Jockey: Craig Williams) Age/Sex: 7YO / Gelding Barrier: 12 Weight: 57kg Career Record: 30:5-6-5 Career Prize Money: $3,438,148 Winning Distance Range: 1600m-1800m TAB Fixed Odds: W$9.00/PL$3.30 BUCKAROO has his 2nd crack at this race having run 9th in last years race. He was one of the favourites in the race last year after running 2nd in The Caulfield Cup but endured a tough run throughout which had him finishing midfield. The stable has opted for a different approach this year and he didn’t contest the Caulfield Cup but went to The Cox Plate instead where he ran a big race to finish a close 2nd. His different lead up this year is very similar to what we saw the great VERRY ELLEGANT doing before she came out and won the Cup in 2021. He is a runner that will appreciate a wet track so could get both conditions and history on his side, so he does appear to get a very good set up. (Photo by Vince Caligiuri/Getty Images) (3) ARAPAHO (FR) (Trainer: Bjorn Baker / Jockey: Rachel King) Age/Sex: 9YO / Gelding Barrier: 15 Weight: 56.5kg Career Record: 40:10-6-4 Career Prize Money: $3,938,550 Winning Distance Range: 1300m-3200m TAB Fixed Odds: W$51/PL$14 ARAPAHO has had this race on the radar for some time since he won 2025 Sydney Cup back in April and. He won that race in good fashion proving that he is capable at performing strongly over the 3200m distance which is a key piece of form. He hasn’t quite looked in the same strong level of form he was in leading up to that Sydney Cup win, but you know he can see out the 3200m distance well and he will be really well suited in wet conditions so could be a very good roughie chance. (4) VAUBAN (FR) (Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / Jockey: Blake Shinn) Age/Sex: 8YO / Gelding Weight: 56.5kg Career Record: 28:9-5-4 Career Prize Money: $2,016,243 Winning Distance Range: 2000m-3382m TAB Fixed Odds: W$26/PL$8 This is the 3rd year in a row we have had VAUBAN contest the cup. He may be one the punters want to forget having started as one of the favourites in both attempts at the race and finishing outside of the top 10 on both occasions. It is a different set up for him this year given he was sold after last years race to remain here in Australia and be trained locally. The key to him could be that he has had more time to acclimatise here and settle in. His form has waned slightly in his recent lead up races to this, but if he does turn up on the big stage, he has some very strong European form and is a proven winner over staying trips and should handle a wet track. He probably needs to find a level of improvement to be a chance. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos via Getty Images) (5) CHEVALIER ROSE (JPN) (Trainer: Hisashi Shimizu / Jockey: Damien Lane) Age/Sex: 8YO / Horse Weight: 55.5kg Career Record: 35:5-5-2 Career Prize Money: $3,131,173 Winning Distance Range: 1600m-3600m TAB Fixed Odds: W$51/PL$14 CHEVALIER ROSE is the only Japanese horse in this year’s race. The Japanese are known for their well-bred runners from high class pedigrees and produce some of the best horses in the world. I’m not sure CHEVALIER ROSE is one of the best Japanese horses we have seen here in recent times, but he has been contesting Group 1&2 level races over the staying distances this season. His form hasn’t been outstanding in those races so he probably needs to really go to a new level here and he may not be ideally suited in wet conditions either so I would be surprised to see him finish in the top 3 of this race. (6) PRESAGE NOCTURNE (IRE) (Trainer: Alessandro Botti / Jockey: Stephane Pasquier) Age/Sex: 6YO Horse Weight: 55.5kg Career Record: 17:5-5-3 Career Prize Money: $782,192 Winning Distance Range: 2500m-3200m TAB Fixed Odds: W$8/PL$3 PRESAGE NOCTURNE is another well credentialed international horse. He has been in super form in high level staying races in France when winning at Group 3 level over the 3000m then a 3rd place in a 3200m Group 1. He has had the one run here in Australia already when he competed in the Caulfield Cup and finishing 4th. He was a long way back in the run there but was finishing that race off as strong as any other horse and it was a really good look at what he is capable of so expecting him to be better suited up in distance today. A wet track will really suit him so he looks ideally set up to put in a big performance and should be a strong top 3 chance. Valiant King won the The Lexus Bart Cummings at Flemington comfortably. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos via Getty Images) (7) MIDDLE EARTH (GB) (Trainer: Ciaron Maher / Jockey: Ethan Brown) Age/Sex: 6YO / Gelding Barrier: 13 Weight: 54.5kg Career Record: 17:5-2-2 Career Prize Money: $706,040 Winning Distance Range: 2000m-2816m TAB Fixed Odds: W$34/PL$10 UK import MIDDLE EARTH made an instant impact in his Australian debut in March when winning a Flemington. This race has appeared to be the long-term goal for him but feel it’s fair to say he just hasn’t been performing as well as you would want coming into this Grand Final race. Perhaps rising in distance to the 3200m could help him improve but a wet track is probably another negative he doesn’t need. His recent form suggests he is a top 10 chance at best. (8) MEYDAAN (IRE) (Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford / Jockey: James McDonald) Age/Sex: 5YO / Gelding Barrier: 22 Weight: 54kg Career Record: 14:2-2-2 Career Prize Money: $350,072 Winning Distance Range: 2011m-2212m TAB Fixed Odds: W$19/PL$6 MEYDAAN is one of the most lightly raced and youngest horses in this field having only had the 14 career runs. He has been showing good potential in Group 3 level races back in the UK having run into the placings in both runs before arriving here. He finished midfield in the Caulfield Cup having had a tough run from a wide position so that might not be the best guide on his potential. This is the first time he rises in distance over the 2400m so it will prove a good test of his capabilities. He partners with leading jockey James McDonald who will give him every chance, but it feels like maybe it is a bit early for him in his career to be winning this race. (9) ABSURDE (FR) (Trainer: Willie Mullins / Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy) Age/Sex: 8YO / Gelding Weight: 53.5kg Career Record: 28:7-7-5 Career Prize Money: $1,570,305 Winning Distance Range: 2000m-4023m TAB Fixed Odds: W$21/PL$6 This is the 3rd year in a row ABSURDE has competed in the Cup. He has been well backed in both previous starts and put in a good performance last year when finishing 5th. He might not be a very popular pick with punters having looked to have had his chances to win in previous years. But the stable have taken a different approach this time and decided to give him a lead up run in the Caulfield Cup. I thought his run was OK in the Caulfield Cup, he finished midfield but didn’t appear to handle the tighter track so he should be better suited here today at the bigger track and comes into the race with more fitness than he has had in previous years so perhaps that could be the key, he doesn’t look the worst chance again. Trainer Joseph O'Brien has Al Riffa among the favourites for the big race. (Photo By Seb Daly/Sportsfile via Getty Images) (10) FLATTEN THE CURVE (IRE) (Trainer: Henk Grewe / Jockey: Thore Hammer Hansen) Age/Sex: 7YO / Gelding Barrier: 17 Weight: 53.5kg Career Record: 41:8-9-4 Career Prize Money: $952,074 Winning Distance Range: 2400m-3700m TAB Fixed Odds: W$34/PL$10 FLATTEN THE CURVE feels like one of the international horses who has flown under the radar coming into the Cup. He is a German raced horse who won his way into the Cup with a big margin win at Kentucky. His only failures of late have been in races on dirt or synthetic tracks so he should appreciate the grass track here and he is a multiple winner at distances over 3000m. He came under the attention of Stewards earlier in the week to have potentially been under an injury cloud, but has since been cleared to run, he could be a roughie chance who has flown right under the radar of some. (11) LAND LEGEND (FR) (Trainer: Chris Waller / Jockey: Joao Moreira) Age/Sex: 6YO / Gelding Barrier: 16 Weight: 53.5kg Career Record: 22:3-2-2 Career Prize Money: $1,343,382 Winning Distance Range: 2050m-2600m TAB Fixed Odds: W$101/PL$24 LAND LEGEND was one of the strong hopes in last year’s Cup and ended up finishing 8th after struggling to find rhythm throughout the race. He has had his issues previously but the stable looked to have found the improvement in him when he began this campaign, and he looked one of the strong early chances in betting markets, but his last two runs have disappointed seeing him finish last in both. He may have had some excuses last start with a breathing issue but even despite that, he needs to find a big level of improvement to be a hope in this race. (12) SMOKIN’ ROMANS (NZ) (Trainer: Ciaron Maher / Jockey: Ben Melham) Age/Sex: 9YO / Gelding Barrier: 11 Weight: 53.5kg Career Record: 53:11-9-3 Career Prize Money: $2,382,890 Winning Distance Range: 1500m-2600m TAB Fixed Odds: W$101/PL$24 Veteran stayer SMOKIN’ ROMANS runs in the Cup for the 2nd time in his career having last run in this race back in 2022. The best form of his career was definitely way back in 2022 with his best race result recently was winning the Warrnambool Cup. He will go around at big odds and a top 10 finish would be a big effort for him, but he has performed well on wet tracks previously so if the rain comes it shouldn’t disadvantage him. (13) CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD (IRE) (Trainer: Kris Lees / Jockey: Tim Clark) Age/Sex: 7YO / Gelding Barrier: 24 Weight: 53kg Career Record: 17:4-3-2 Career Prize Money: $756,850 Winning Distance Range: 2112m-2514m TAB Fixed Odds: W$101/PL$24 CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD is one of the rougher chances in the race this year. He is European bred so has the pedigree to run out long distances but this will be his first try at running more than 2700m. He generally likes to settle near the lead so his best chance in this race may be if he can get to the front easily and control the speed of the race and make it harder for others behind him but he looks up against it in this field. (14) HALF YOURS (Trainer: Tony & Calvin McEvoy/ Jockey: Jamie Melham) Age/Sex: 5YO / Gelding Weight: 53kg Career Record: 14:7-3-0 Career Prize Money: $3,509,840 Winning Distance Range: 1430m-2400m TAB Fixed Odds: W$6/PL$2.50 HALF YOURS probably holds the best winning hope for the local horses and is one of the main favourites in the race. He is coming into this race in good form having won the Caulfield Cup in impressive fashion. He is attempting to become the 13th horse in history to have won the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double. But he is ticking all the right boxes and is in the best form of his career so he deserves to be one of the favourites for the race. He is one of the better chances in this race that will be ideally suited if the track is wet. He is in super form and conditions will suit so it would be a surprise if he didn’t finish in the top half of the field and is a strong winning chance (15) MORE FELONS (IRE) (Trainer: Chris Waller / Jockey: Tommy Berry) Age/Sex: 7YO / Gelding Barrier: 15 Weight: 53kg Career Record: 21:5-3-0 Career Prize Money: $806,746 Winning Distance Range: 1609m-3381m TAB Fixed Odds: W$81/PL$21 MORE FELONS has remained in Australia since coming to the country to compete in the 2023 edition of the Cup where he ran 12th. He has had an interrupted career since moving to Australia but has been showing signs of improvement across his last 4 runs since having the long break. He is a winner over 3200m back in the UK so he can handle the tough trip. It would take a very big effort for him to come off a long break and win this race, but you can never doubt master trainer Chris Waller having him in top order. If he does get back to close to his best, he isn’t the worst roughie chance in this race. SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – OCTOBER 19: Tommy Berry riding Athabascan wins Race 1 The Star St Leger Stakes during Sydney Racing – The Everest Day at Royal Randwick Racecourse on October 19, 2024 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Jeremy Ng/Getty Images) (16) ONESMOOTHOPERATOR (USA) (Trainer: Brian Ellison/ Jockey: Harry Coffey) Age/Sex: 8YO / Gelding Weight: 53kg Career Record: 48:6-11-6 Career Prize Money: $1,411,317 Winning Distance Range: 2050m-3319m TAB Fixed Odds: W$18/PL$6 ONESMOOTHOPERATOR won his ticket into this race last year by winning the Geelong Cup but took a different approach to this yeah and is coming in off an impressive win in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. He finished midfield in last years race, but his recent performance at The Valley suggests he can improve on last years effort and push for a top 10 finish again. He will have a key eye on the conditions as he is a runner who wants a dry track, so the rain may lower his chances. (17) FURTHUR (IRE) (Trainer: Andrew Balding / Jockey: Michael Dee) Age/Sex: 4YO / Horse Weight: 52kg Career Record: 8:2-2-0 Career Prize Money: $297,842 Winning Distance Range: 2212m-2715m TAB Fixed Odds: W$26/PL$8 FURTHUR is another young horse and progressive staying type who will attempt to take a big jump up in level for this race. He was recently purchased by a team of Australian owners who have identified his big potential. His form has been solid having won a Group 3 in August before finishing 6th at Group 1 level before travelling over here to Australia. He does look to have good potential and if he was to win here it wouldn’t be a complete shock, but I feel it is a big challenge this early into his career. Keep a close eye on him as he could return in 2026 as an even more improved product. (18) PARCHMENT PARTY (USA) (Trainer: William Mott / Jockey: John Velazquez) Age/Sex: 5YO / Horse Weight: 52kg Career Record: 11:4-1-1 Career Prize Money: $642,690 Winning Distance Range: 1710m-2816m TAB Fixed Odds: W$41/PL$11 PARCHMENT PARTY will look to make history in the race as the first ever American runner in the history of The Melbourne Cup. He won his ticket into this race by winning The Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup Stakes over the 2816m. He looks a type that will be very strong over a 3200m trip and the connections of the horse have echoed their confidence in his staying ability. But one query on him is how he will go on the Flemington turf as majority of his racing career has been run on dirt tracks. So a wet track on grass could really test him (19) ATHABASCAN (FR) (Trainer: John O’Shea & Tom Charlton / Jockey: Declan Bates) Age/Sex: 7YO / Gelding Weight: 51.5kg Career Record: 39:4-6-4 Career Prize Money: $1,498,202 Winning Distance Range: 2000m-2600m TAB Fixed Odds: W$101/PL$24 ATHABASCAN tackles the Melbourne Cup for the first time in his career having previously run well in the 2024 & 2023 editions of The Sydney Cup which is a positive indicator he can perform well over the 3200m trip. It is a bit of a big jump up for him here so feel he could be tested. (20) GOODIE TWO SHOES (GB) (Trainer: Joseph O’Brien / Jockey: Wayne Lordan) Age/Sex: 7YO / Mare Barrier: 20 Weight: 51.5kg Career Record: 26:13-0-7 Career Prize Money: $895,872 Winning Distance Range: 1811m-3419m TAB Fixed Odds: W$41/PL$11 GOODIE TWO SHOES is the 2nd of multiple Melbourne Cup winning trainer Joseph O’Brien’s runners in this years Cup. While majority of attention is on her stablemate AL RIFFA, she isn’t without her own strong chance. She has an incredible winning strike rate having won 50 per cent of her career races including recently going on a 6 race winning streak before a last start placing at Group 3 level over the 2820m trip. She has won previously at the 3200m trip so has the right credentials to be a strong hope in the race. If there was one negative on her chances, it would be the wet track as the suggestion is she prefers it dry so she will be hoping for less rain to arrive than forecast on the day. Copied URL to clipboard Robbie Dolan dares to dream of second Melbourne Cup Jockey Robbie Dolan shocked the world with his... (21) RIVER OF STARS (IRE) (Trainer: Chris Waller / Jockey: Beau Mertans) Age/Sex: 7YO / Mare Barrier: 14 Weight: 51.5kg Career Record: 21:4-6-4 Career Prize Money: $1,543,961 Winning Distance Range: 2414m-2896m TAB Fixed Odds: W$17/PL$5 Trained by Chris Waller for the powerful Yulong Stable. RIVER OF STARS has made a good impact for connections since arriving in Australia in April. She ran 3rd in the Sydney Cup in only her 2nd run in the country and has been slowly improving each run this season which was shown last start when she finished 2nd in The Caulfield Cup. If you dig deep into her European form, she has produced some good results in Group and Listed races that read really well for this years cup. She will carry a light weight and can handle a wet track so looks really well suited in the conditions. Waller is a master Grand Final trainer and she looks ready to peak in this race so consider her a very good chance at reasonable odds. (22) ROYAL SUPREMACY (IRE) (Trainer: Ciaron Maher / Jockey: Robbie Dolan) Age/Sex: 5YO / Gelding Barrier: 21 Weight: 51kg Career Record: 14:5-3-2 Career Prize Money: $1,137,212 Winning Distance Range: 1408m-2400m TAB Fixed Odds: W$31/PL$9 ROYAL SUPREMACY is at big odds but certainly not one of the worst roughie hopes. He is a European import who made his Australian debut earlier in the year back in March. He has taken some time to find his best form, but put some writing up on the wall two starts ago when he won The Group 1 Metrop in Sydney before coming to Victoria and running a solid 5th in The Caulfield Cup. All of his form lines look very solid including all the way back in the UK where he has been placed at Group 2 & 3 level and his jockey Robbie Dolan knows how to ride a winner at big odds after he took out last years Cup. If the track is as wet as expected I feel he will be one of the better suited types so is certainly a top 10 chance. (23) TORRANZINO (Trainer: Paul Preusker / Jockey: Celine Gaudry) Age/Sex: 6YO / Gelding Barrier: 18 Weight: 51kg Career Record: 33:6-7-2 Career Prize Money: $1,092,090 Winning Distance Range: 1500m-2400m TAB Fixed Odds: W$31/PL$9 If TORANZINO was to win the race it would be one of the great story of Cup history for country trainer Paul Preusker. It would be fair to say that he is in career best form having nearly won his ticket into the Cup two start ago in The Bart Cummings, but then did manage to secure his place by winning the Geelong Cup in good fashion. His previous form earlier in the year doesn’t suggest Melbourne Cup winner so realistically a top 10 finish would be a massive result for him, but a win would be one of the all time greats. (24) VALIANT KING (GB) (Trainer: Chris Waller / Jockey: Jye McNeil) Age/Sex: 6YO / Gelding Barrier: 10 Weight: 51kg Career Record: 19:2-3-3 Career Prize Money: $917,222 More Coverage How to live stream the 2025 Melbourne Cup James McKern 23 Melb Cup horses wiped out in 60 seconds James Dampney Winning Distance Range: 2012m-2520m TAB Fixed Odds: W$7.50/PL$2.90 VALIANT KING finished midfield in last years race, but is certainly in better form leading into this race. He won his ticket into the race by winning the Bart Cummings and then made a bold run in the Caulfield Cup to finish 3rd. He was one of the fastest finishers in that Caulfield Cup so he certainly looks ready to peak here now. He is well in the betting markets and appears to be peaking at the perfect time to put in an improved effort on last year.
