WASHINGTON, DC – On the afternoon of Monday, September 15, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was received by President Trump. After the meeting, the Patriarchate issued the following announcement:
“On Monday, September 15, 2025, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew met at the White House with His Excellency Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, the sixth U.S. President he has met.
The meeting in the Oval Office, which lasted more than half an hour, took place in a very cordial atmosphere, with the President expressing great interest in the various initiatives and ministry of the Ecumenical Throne and in the life of Christians in Turkey.
During the discussion, His All-Holiness congratulated the President for his initiatives and overall efforts toward the establishment of peace in the world, and especially in Ukraine. They also discussed the situation of Christians in the Middle East.
Reference was also made to the forthcoming visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV of Rome to Turkey, in order to jointly commemorate with His All-Holiness this year’s 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. The meeting drew great interest from the Vice President, His Excellency JD Vance, who is a Roman Catholic Christian.
The Patriarch extended condolences to the President of the United States on the assassination of his friend and colleague Charlie Kirk and thanked him for the warm welcome and the beautiful gift.
Accompanying His All-Holiness to the Oval Office were Their Eminences Archbishops Elpidophoros of America, Theodoritos of Laodicea, and Maximos of Selybria; the Very Reverend Grand Ecclesiarch Aetios, Director of the Private Patriarchal Office; and the Reverend Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne Alexander Karloutsos.
The President was accompanied by the Vice President, as well as the Honorable Reince Priebus, member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Intelligence Services, and Michael Kratsios, the President’s Science Advisor.”
