MediaTek's New 2nm Flagship Chip Has Officially Taped Out

MediaTek, the well-known chip brand, has just revealed a huge step forward: they’ve successfully “taped out” their next flagship processor using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process. This positions MediaTek as a key player in the next generation of high-performance chips.
For those not deep in the world of chip design, “taping out” is a big deal. The term refers to the final stage where the chip’s designer sent it off for manufacturing. In other words, the blueprints are complete, and this new chip is ready to become a reality. This makes MediaTek one of the first companies to embrace TSMC’s most advanced technology.
MediaTek’s first 2nm chip is on the way, powered by TSMC
So, why is this 2nm process so important? Basically, we are looking at the basis of the next generation of high-performance chips. TSMC’s 2nm node is a technological leap, being the first to use a nanosheet transistor structure. This translates to serious improvements in how our devices perform.
Compared to the existing N3E process, the 2nm technology offers an 18% boost in performance while using the same amount of power. There’s also a remarkable 36% reduction in power consumption at the same speed. For us, that means faster, more efficient devices with significantly better battery life. We also have to take into account the custom developments and optimizations each chip designer makes that make things even better.
It could be the Dimensity 9600
MediaTek has not yet officially revealed the name of the 2nm chip. However, industry sources speculate that it is the upcoming Dimensity 9600. This new processor is expected to be a major part of the company’s push to strengthen its global position in cutting-edge semiconductor technologies. The collaboration with TSMC also continues and reinforces the collaboration between both chip tech giants.
The good news is that we won’t have to wait too long. MediaTek plans to have the new chip ready for mass production and available on the market by the end of 2026. This puts them in a prime position alongside other tech giants like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD, all of whom are also expected to use TSMC’s 2nm process for their upcoming products. That said, before that, the company will launch the 3nm Dimensity 9500 this month.
