Media Must Challenge Power, Not Chase Ads: Odisha Law Minister

At a vibrant gathering held at Pragativadi premises in Odisha, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan made a bold statement: “Journalists must pull the government’s ear like schoolteachers.” He emphasised that fearless journalism is essential to refine governance and bring truth to the public eye. The event marked the 93rd birth anniversary of veteran journalist and politician Pradyumna Bal, founder Editor of Pragativadi. Harichandan hailed Bal as a towering figure in Odisha’s political and journalistic landscape, calling him a “school of politics” and a relentless voice for the voiceless. He lamented that fear of losing advertisements often silences the truth, weakening democracy. Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty, former Chief Justice and Lokpal of India, described Bal as a rare blend of politician, journalist, artist, and educator. He recalled how Bal left Bombay’s film industry at his father’s insistence and returned to Odisha, eventually becoming an MP and founding the newspaper Pragativadi to spread Gandhian ideals. Professor Biswaranjan, the keynote speaker, noted that Bal brought revolutionary changes to journalism that many failed to grasp. He criticised the current media landscape, where advertisements dominate and factual reporting is suppressed. “Journalism must be a mission, not a profession,” he said. Mahanga MLA Sarada Pradhan highlighted Bal’s role in Odisha’s political formation and his ideological alignment with Jayaprakash Narayan. Despite political setbacks, Bal found greater success through journalism. The event featured floral tributes, a cake-cutting ceremony by KIIT students, and awards for competition winners. Justice Manoranjan Mohanty introduced the guests, while Dr Mona Lisa Bal delivered the vote of thanks.
