Traditionally observed on Sept. 23, the Pourakarmikas’ Day celebration has been advanced this year to ensure full participation in view of the upcoming Dasara festivities and to honour frontline workers
In recognition of their dedicated services to the city, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) celebrated Pourakarmikas’ Day on Tuesday, felicitating sanitation workers for their commendable efforts in keeping the city clean and hygienic.
MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif inaugurated the event, attended by pourakarmikas and their family members. Traditionally observed on September 23, the Pourakarmikas’ Day celebration was advanced this year to ensure full participation in view of the upcoming Dasara festivities and to honour the frontline workers.
As part of the celebration, sports and recreational activities were organised on September 10 at the Pavilion Grounds. Events such as cricket, throwball, athletics, and other games were conducted to promote fitness, create camaraderie and team spirit among the pourakarmikas.
On Tuesday, 65 outstanding pourakarmikas were awarded the “Best Pourakarmika Award” in recognition of their exemplary service. Additionally, children of pourakarmikas who excelled in SSLC and II PU examinations were presented with the Prathiba Puraskar to encourage academic achievement.
Earlier in the day, over 200 pourakarmikas participated in a march from the old Deputy Commissioner’s office to Kalamandira, holding the shield and memento presented to MCC by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in New Delhi. The recognition was awarded for securing the third cleanest city ranking under the Super Swachh League Cities for the year 2024-25 Swachh Survekshan awards.
