Former President Thabo Mbeki has welcomed KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, exposing the rot in the country.
Mkhwanazi’s allegations of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu having links with crime syndicates are among the issues probed at the Madlanga Commission.
Mbeki spoke on the sidelines of the African National Congress (ANC) political school in Durban, for members of the provincial and regional task teams responsible for the renewal of the party after last year’s general elections.
Mbeki says that since the ANC became the governing party, it has been infiltrated by people who are after power in order to enrich themselves.
“I’m very, very glad that Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had the courage to speak out on this thing. Because at last now we have the possibility to expose the rot through the Madlanga Commission. So at least the country has a picture of what the real state of affairs of the criminal justice system is. Who are these criminals who are doing all sorts of terrible things? Who are they, where do they come from, and how do they operate? To answer those questions, because in the end, there must come a comprehensive response to the issue of crime and corruption in the country.”

At the end of the day’s discussions at the political school, provincial task team convener Jeff Radebe read out a declaration that points to how frank and far-reaching the discussions have been. Among other things, it’s been resolved that everybody will have to reapply for ANC membership and that lifestyle audits will be done.
“The Push To Talk should urgently take the responsibility of guiding organisational renewal and rebuilding, with clearly defined terms of reference, including the criteria for the admission of ANC members to ensure that new members be subjected to probation accompanied by clearly defined tasks, political education programmes, and the process of monitoring and evaluation.”
