MBDA to deliver new anti-ship missiles for Italy

European missile manufacturer MBDA has signed a production contract with Italy’s National Directorate of Naval Armaments for the TESEO MK2/E, a new-generation anti-ship missile that will become a core weapon system aboard the Italian Navy’s future surface fleet. The agreement covers the supply of TESEO MK2/E missiles, which will be deployed on new naval platforms including the FREMM EVO-class frigates, the PPA (Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura) multi-purpose combat ships, and the next-generation DDX destroyers. The new weapon will also complement the TESEO MK2/A variant, which is already operational aboard the FREMM and Horizon-class warships. This latest production deal follows a 2021 contract that launched the development, integration, and qualification phase of the missile. MBDA says the transition to production demonstrates that the system has reached maturity and fully meets the operational requirements of the Italian Navy. The TESEO MK2/E represents a complete redesign of Italy’s long-range anti-ship missile capability. Developed to address emerging maritime threats and evolving mission demands, the missile is equipped with an advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) seeker and a satellite data link, enabling extended range, precision engagement, and mid-course control. According to MBDA, the missile’s capabilities go beyond conventional anti-ship roles. It is designed to engage both long-range naval and land targets, and its advanced mission planning tools enable deep strike operations against coastal or inland objectives. The new seeker technology and guidance systems also enhance its resistance to electronic countermeasures and improve accuracy in contested environments. “The TESEO MK2/E is the answer to evolving threats that need the implementation of new operational requirements,” the company said. “This new generation missile is flexible and ready to be adapted to the needs of international customers. It builds on decades of experience provided by the TESEO family (known worldwide as OTOMAT) and will lead to a substantial enhancement in anti-ship capabilities.” The missile will play a central role in equipping Italy’s next generation of surface combatants, many of which are currently under construction or in the early stages of delivery. With its dual capability against sea and land targets, the TESEO MK2/E is expected to significantly expand the operational reach of Italian naval forces, particularly in high-intensity maritime environments. Lorenzo Mariani, MBDA Executive Group Director of Sales & Business Development and Managing Director of MBDA in Italy, welcomed the milestone, highlighting the collaborative development process with the Italian Navy. “I am particularly proud of the signing of this contract, which confirms the success of a process led in full synergy with our Navy,” Mariani said. “In addition, it is fully aligned with the roadmaps defined with the development contract. Starting the production of TESEO MK2/E demonstrates not only that the product is mature and fully compliant with the Navy’s requirements, but also that it perfectly complements MBDA’s portfolio, adding a new benchmark capability in the anti-ship domain, to be offered to foreign markets as well.” The TESEO MK2/E continues the legacy of the TESEO family, known internationally under the OTOMAT designation, which has served as a mainstay of Italy’s surface warfare capabilities for decades. Its introduction is expected to enhance deterrence, extend strike range, and provide a more flexible response to complex naval threats.
