Mayo Clinic Health System breaks ground on Sparta Hospital expansion

SPARTA, Wis. (WEAU) - The City of Sparta and Mayo Clinic Health System are celebrating the groundbreaking of a new expansion to Mayo Clinic’s Sparta Hospital. Mayo officials say the expansion will add 10 more comfortable in-patient rooms, more staffing, and other benefits. “We also will be adding the services of infusion and inpatient pharmacy to our patients so they can get specialized medications, chemotherapy, here locally and don’t have to travel so far to get those needed medications,” says Mayo Clinic Health System physician Jessica Sosso. Mayor Kevin Riley says the expansion is part of a big resurgence that will provide many benefits for the city. “We’ve got a library expansion we’ve just completed, the Chatty Kathy Playground that we just completed, South Pointe Business Park. This is Mayo looking at us and saying we believe in you, Sparta. We’re going to invest in you in the most tangible way possible, putting a building right in Sparta,” says Riley. Mayo officials and employees who live in Sparta say they are thrilled the plan that has been in the works for years is coming to fruition. “As someone who works here and also lives here, I’m very excited that we are making such a strong commitment to our patients by saying we are here to stay, we are here to care for you, and we are here to provide the best experience for you,” says Sosso. Mayor Riley says adding more to the hospital will bring a chain reaction to the city that will lead to benefits for other local organizations. “There will be an influx of people because they’ll need more people to staff the hospital. Along with people that come to staff the hospital come children for the schools. It’s that whole cycle of bringing in more personnel and having it fill coffers, fill the schools, and fill the community,” says Riley. After the project is complete, the oldest part of original hospital building that has been standing for over 150 years will be torn down. The expansion is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027.
