Max Verstappen makes staggering ‘retirement’ claim

His McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, dominated qualifying on Sunday morning (AEDT) to take pole, while Piastri struggled and only managed to finish eighth fastest. In a small bit of good news, the Aussie will start one position higher in seventh, with Williams driver Carlos Sainz demoted from that grid slot due to a five-place grid penalty. Piastri’s other title rival, Max Verstappen, who has won three of the last four races, will start fifth. The four-time world champion has stormed into title contention after claiming as many points (119) as both McLaren drivers combined since the summer break. The drivers’ championship could be turned on its head in Mexico, with Piastri only holding a narrow 14-point lead. If Norris can replicate anything like he did in practice, by midday Monday (AEDT), he could lead the championship if he is to take the victory and Piastri finishes fifth or lower. Red Bull’s Verstappen is 40 points adrift of Piastri and won’t be able to take the lead regardless of what happens on Monday. But if he can pull off another masterclass in Mexico he can close the gap even further on the McLaren duo. You can follow all of the action as it happens right here.
