As Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule reflected on a win over Michigan State, which he acknowledged included a “horrific” second quarter, one of the major takeaways was about the Huskers’ growth up front.
Facing a Spartan offense known for running the football, Rhule saw a defensive-line performance strong enough to force Michigan State to change its approach.
“I thought they made a real step in stopping the run and turning it into a passing game,” Rhule said of the Husker defense.
An active pass rush, led by redshirt freshman Williams Nwaneri, also impacted the game heavily. Nebraska consistently pressured the quarterback and recorded four sacks.
“I thought the pass rush showed up this game,” Rhule said.
The Husker offensive line was also under siege in its own pass protection, but Rhule was pleased with NU’s new-look unit, which featured junior Elijah Pritchett at left tackle and sophomore Gunnar Gottula at right tackle.
“Some of the sacks are on them and some of the sacks are on other people,” Rhule said of the Husker offensive line. “… We’re blocking people, but we just need to be more consistent.”
Other quick hits
* Rhule’s initial impression of Nebraska’s upcoming opponent, Maryland, is that the Terrapins have a “fantastic defense” which is among the nation’s best in yards allowed and third-down defense.
An elite pass rush and “dynamic” wide receiver room are among Maryland’s top strengths, Rhule said.
* As Nebraska prepares for its first true road game of the season, it will involve a shakeup to the Huskers’ normal weekly routine.
Rather than traveling on Friday as usual, Nebraska will fly to the east coast Thursday evening and will spend the additional time together working to “lock in” for the game,” Rhule said.
Nebraska will also hold its normal Friday walkthrough practice at a local high school.
“The number one thing is that we don’t complain about it,” Rhule said of travel. “It’s just part of it. We’ve had a year to prepare for it and we know what to expect.”
* Senior defensive back Malcolm Hartzog, who’s missed the last three games due to injury, isn’t expected to travel for the Maryland game, though the NU coaching staff will evaluate his availability during the week.
“We had some guys come out of the game banged up, so we’ll see who can practice tomorrow and who can’t,” Rhule said.
