Newton South girls’ volleyball takes the fifth, clinching a 16 vs. 1 Division 1 stunner over Chelmsford Tuesday’s boys’ soccer playoff roundup: With a Hollywood ending, Lowell survives double-OT battle with Beverly Tuesday’s girls’ soccer playoff roundup: It took two shootouts for No. 20 Westford to take down No. 13 Brookline Tuesday’s field hockey playoffs roundup: No. 10 Lynnfield scores early to stun No. 7 Hanover Tuesday’s girls’ volleyball playoff roundup: Wayland’s Anna Yalli kills any hope of advancing for Billerica We’ve celebrated plenty of 1,000-assist accomplishments in this space, and a surprising amount of 2,000-assist milestones, but Tuesday featured our first athlete to reach 1,000 kills this season. Amazingly, Central Catholic’s Julie Hall, who had 30 kills in a 3-2 Division 1 second-round win over Westborough, is still a junior. She’ll have the rest of this year’s run, plus one more season to add to her impressive total. Senior center mid Gavin Foley broke Watertown’s single-season soccer scoring record with his 17th goal of the season in a 3-0 first-round in over St. Mary’s. Foley played for the Raiders as a freshman, then spent two years with MLS Next before returning for his senior season, which has also seen him dish 10 assists. On Monday, Waltham field hockey defeated Lexington, 3-1, for its first tournament win in 17 years. Also Monday, Milford girls’ soccer beat Billerica, 2-1, for its first playoff win since 2013. The first week of the field hockey and girls’ volleyball tournaments had pretty much gone to seed. Until Tuesday, that is. That’s when the brackets starting wildin’ out. The headliner was 16th-seeded Newton South knocking off the No. 1 seed in the Division 1 tournament, Chelmsford, 3-2. The previously undefeated Lions (21-1) fell in five after taking the first two sets. Newton South (13-7) won the fifth set, 15-13. It’s the earliest a No. 1 seed has lost since 2021, when Hopedale was the No. 1 team in Division 5 and lost in the first round to the since-shuttered Paolo Freire Social Justice Charter School. AJ Traub has the full story on Newton South’s stunner. It was far from the only surprise result of the night. Also in D1 girls’ volleyball, No. 14 Wellesley took out No. 3 Shrewsbury, 3-1. In D2, No. 13 Reading secured a 3-2 first-round upset of No. 4 Minnechaug, and in D3 it was No. 11 Newburyport getting the best of No. 6 Hanover, 3-2. In Division 3 field hockey, No. 11 East Longmeadow took out No. 6 Medway, 1-0, in the second round, while No. 10 Lynnfield took care of business vs. No. 7 Hanover, 2-0. Girls’ soccer saw No. 20 Dedham eliminate No. 13 Apponequet, 3-2, in the Division 3 first round, and in the D1 bracket, No. 20 Westford need two rounds of penalty kicks to upset No. 13 Brookline, 3-2. ▪ St. John’s Prep graduate Alex Bajoras, a heavyweight from Gloucester who is wrestling at Wyoming Seminary, has committed to Rutgers where he will team up with New England Hall of Famer Nate Blanchette (Central Catholic). ▪ Lincoln-Sudbury senior Champa Visetsin announced her verbal commitment to play Division 1 golf at Stonehill College. ▪ Weymouth senior catcher/outfielder Devin Kelsch announced he has committed to play baseball at Salem State. By capturing the Boston City League title with a 20-0 win over Brighton, Boston Latin football coach Rocco Zizza was named New England Patriots Coach of the Week. Zizza coached the Dragons to their sixth-straight win and a 5-0 league record (7-1 overall) thanks to a pair of touchdowns from senior quarterback Jack Shapiro. “Their defense set the tone, their offense took over, and under his leadership they showed exactly what discipline, commitment and heart look like on a football field,” said Patriots Hall of Fame Andre Tippett, who presented the program with a check for $1,000 from the Patriots Charitable Foundation and the Kraft family. ▪ Boston University junior Maggie Driscoll, a Watertown graduate, was named the Patriot League Field Hockey Midfielder of the Week after finishing with one goal, one assist, and one save in a 3-2 overtime win over Colgate to earn a berth in the Patriot League Championship. BU teammate Sophie Ortyl, a Lexington graduate, was an honorable mention after making six saves, three in each half vs. Colgate. ▪ Wheaton senior Brian Hixson, a Scituate graduate, and freshman Marcus Tran, a Milton graduate, were a part of the NEWMAC’s Relay of the Week. As two legs of the 200-yard freestyle relay, they posted a winning time of 1 minute, 25.65 seconds to win against Bentley, and 1:26.05 to beat Bridgewater State. ▪ Wheaton senior Aidan Doyle, a Thayer graduate from Kingston, was tabbed NEWMAC men’s soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, racking up 5 points on a goal and three assists in a pair of wins for the Lyons. ▪ Bowdoin sophomore Angus Leary, a Roxbury Latin graduate from West Roxbury, was named NESCAC Football Defensvie Player of the Week thanks to six tackles and 2.5 sacks in a 17-9 win over Bates.
