Week 3 of the high school football season arrived Thursday night as Randolph and Whittier became the first two teams in the state to record three wins.
The Blue Devils made mincemeat of Springfield’s High School of Commerce, breaking out to a 55-6 halftime lead as Rayshaud Robinson ran for 196 yards in the first three quarters and Abe Cornet connected with Mekhi White for a pair of passing TDs as the second half was played in running time.
Sophomore Jayden McGuffie ran for 255 yards and two touchdowns in Malden’s 14-12 victory against Somerville, Medford scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to top Lynn Classical 20-0, and Whitter saw four different players score on the ground in a 36-12 win over Lowell Catholic.

2. The upsets
Three top 20 soccer teams lost to unranked sides Thursday.
The Cambridge boys stunned No. 5 Concord-Carlsle, 1-0, marking only the second time in Dual County League history that the Falcons (3-1-1) have beaten the Patriots. Michael Brown’s second goal of the season was the difference, as he took a touch through the box from senior Shiferaw Jida Sesia and beat the keeper.
On the girls’ side, North Quincy trailed No. 8 Duxbury, 1-0, at the half but rallied to win, 3-2, on Maddie O’Donnell’s goal with 20 minutes remaining. Duxbury, which lost in the Division 2 championship last fall, has lost two in a row after a 3-0-1 start.

Lynnfield also posted a 5-0 win over No. 20 North Reading, a score so surprising even Pioneers coach Mark Vermont called it “an anomaly.” Ava Damiani scored four goals for Lynnfield (4-2), including one two minutes into the second half that expanded on a 2-0 halftime lead.

3. Coaching carousel
Ryan Sheehy has been named interim coach of the Methuen/Tewksbury girls’ hockey team. Sheehy has spent the last four years as an assistant with the program, serving as lead decision-maker in some games last year as the Red Rangers went 16-1-3 and reached the Division 1 semifinals under Dave O’Hearn, who died in July after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Sheehy served as a USA Hockey official for six years after playing at Lowell High, where he won three MVC/DCL titles. A teacher in the Methuen district, Sheehy was the 2013 Hobey Baker Character award winner and a past Bruins Sportsmanship Award honoree.
