Mark Sanchez was charged with three misdemeanors after an altercation Saturday in Indianapolis resulted in the 38-year-old getting stabbed and hospitalized.
Sanchez was charged battery with injury, public intoxication and unlawful entry of a vehicle, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
“This incident should never have happened,” Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement. “What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured. As with any case, we will follow the facts and the law wherever they lead.”
The FOX broadcaster was in town to call the Colts-Las Vegas Raiders game on Sunday.
According to an affidavit obtained by ESPN, Sanchez confronted a truck driver who was parked at a hotel loading dock. The driver pepper sprayed Sanchez because he felt he was in danger. Sanchez was still walking toward the man, so the truck driver pulled out his knife and, according to the affidavit, struck Sanchez “two or three times.”
Sanchez was transported to a local hospital where he was later arrested.
The former NFL quarterback played 10 seasons in the NFL.
FOX Sports issued a statement following Sanchez’s hospitalization.
“Mark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition. We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
