Marjorie Taylor Greene calls for George Santos to be pardoned

Firebrand Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene is once again calling for the seven year prison sentence of disgraced congressman George Santos to be commuted, citing his conditions in solitary confinement.

MAGA Republican Greene, known for her inflammatory comments about the LGBTQ+ community, previously urged US president Donald Trump to end Santos’ imprisonment, describing his sentence as “excessive”.

After becoming the first out gay politician to be expelled from US Congress in December 2023, Santos, 37, pleaded guilty to 23 federal felony crimes including aggravated identity theft and wire fraud in August 2024.

In April of this year, he was sentenced seven years and two months in prison by US district judge Joanna Seybert and ordered to pay $578,753 (£430,184.21) in restitution fees to his victims.

On Monday (22 September), Greene took to X, formerly Twitter, to condemn the former New York representative’s prison conditions after he was placed in solitary confinement following a death threat the FBI is investigating.

Santos claimed in a 16 September post he was “forced into solitary confinement while behind bars” but months earlier on 5 April he posted he would demand to be kept in solitary for the duration of his sentence to because he refused “to lose my dignity in anyway shape or form”.

In her post, Greene claimed Santos is “in his cell 24 hours per day”, “only allowed to get a shower 3 times a week”, “does not get any sunlight” and is “only allowed to buy stamps from the commissary and is drinking water from the sink”

Greene labelled his conditions “torture” and said his 87-month sentence is “way too long for the crimes he was sentenced for”.

Former Congressman George Santos has been in solitary confinement for nearly 30 days in FCI Fairton NJ.They say it’s “for his safety” due to threats.I’m told he is in his cell 24 hours per day and he is only allowed to get a shower 3 times a week.He does not get any… pic.twitter.com/oJSGFda2qB— Rep. “There are criminals as we speak serving in Congress and many other former government officials that are criminals walking free that did far more heinous things than George Santos!!!,” he went on to write.

“George Santos had a better voting record than MOST members of Congress!!!

“Including EVERYONE who voted to expel him!!!

“Honestly, George should be pardoned!!!”

Greene reshared a letter she penned to Edward R. Martin Jr, the pardon attorney at the Justice Department, in which she called for Santos’ sentence to be commuted, but posted on X: “I’d like to upgrade it to a pardon request and I will do so.”

In the letter, dated 4 August, Greene said while she “wholeheartedly believe in justice and the rule of the law, and I understand the gravity of such actions” alleged Santos’ sentence “for an individual with no prior criminal record extends far beyond what is warranted”.

Greene went on to say she can “attest to his willingness and dedication to serve the people of New York who elected him to office” and he “committed himself to serving his constituents and did whatever it took to represent their interests in Washington, D.C.”.

“While his crimes warrant punishment, many of my colleagues who I serve with have committed far worse offenses than Mr. Santos yet have faced zero criminal charges. I strongly believe in accountability for one’s actions, but I believe the sentencing of Mr. Santos is an abusive overreach by the judicial system,” she continued.

“Commuting his sentence would acknowledge the severity of his actions and simultaneously provide a path forward in allowing him to make amends for his crimes and strive to better serve the people in his community.”
