A Manteca day care owner has been taken into custody following the death of a four-month-old boy under her care. The infant, later identified as Christian Olvera, became unresponsive at the day care on October 22. Roxanne Helus, who operates Cherished Years Daycare from her home on Merlin Lane, is facing charges related to the tragic incident. According to a report by KCRA, Helus was allegedly intoxicated at the time when the child stopped breathing. Responding to a 1:25 p.m. call, Manteca Police Department officers arrived at the scene to find an adult performing CPR on the infant. Making a desperate effort to save the child, they continued with CPR until medics and the Manteca Fire Department could take over, as reported by ABC10. Christian was rushed to a nearby hospital and subsequently transferred to Oakland Children's Hospital, where, sadly, he passed away last Friday. The Manteca Police Department stated there were no signs of trauma on Christian, and the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy. Helus was booked on charges of felony child endangerment and, following the boy's death, is expected to face additional charges including causing death to a child under eight years old. Informed by CBS Sacramento, Helus has posted bail since her arrest. There were three other adults and four day care children present when the officers arrived, none of whom were harmed. The ongoing investigation into this matter is being assisted by California Community Care Licensing. No details regarding the length of Helus' operation of the day care or her prior history have been disclosed. However, it has been previously noted by the local police that the child was watched at the daycare during the week, as per reports from ABC10. The Manteca Police Department is encouraging anyone with information related to the case to come forward and contact them at 209-456-8101, referencing case number 25-04723.
