Manchester synagogue terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie pictured as further details of his family life revealed

Jihad Al-Shamie knew exactly the community he was about to shatter by killing two Jewish men in a terror attack on Yom Kippur. Al-Shamie ploughed a black Kia Picanto into people gathered outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, on Middleton Road in Crumpsall , on Thursday morning (October 2). He then got out of the car and began to stab people at the scene , who had gathered to mark the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Two men – Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66 – tragically died . Three other victims were seriously injured – one with stab wounds, one who was struck by the Kia and one who may have been injured as officers stopped the attacker. The 35-year-old is understood to have grown up in the Crumpsall area with his two younger brothers. A YouTube account attributed to a medical company linked to his father, Faraj Al-Shamie, hosts a series of home videos from the boys’ north Manchester upbringing. One shows a nativity at Crumpsall Lane Primary School, while another shows a visitor to the family’s then-home on Delaunays Road in 1995. His father, a doctor, also shared videos from his work – including footage from a hospital reportedly ‘on the front lines’ in South Sudan at the time of civil war. On social media, Faraj Al-Shamie has shared several political posts relating to conflict in the Arab states. It also includes multiple anti-Israel posts. One brother is the sole director of a limited company, believed to be in the health sector, while it’s understood the youngest is a software engineer. Police have described Al-Shamie as a British citizen of Syrian descent. It’s believed he entered the UK as a child and was granted British citizenship in 2006. More recently, Al-Shamie was believed to be living on Langley Crescent, a tiny street in Prestwich , around two miles from the scene. He was pictured on his father’s Facebook profile holding a baby, with the caption by his dad: “Great Welcome grandson.” Neighbour Simon Barlass, 56, told the Manchester Evening News yesterday: “The guy who’s been shot, he lived there. “I didn’t know his name, but he used to bench press in the garden and he’d go over and use the shops over the road and come back.” Neighbours of Al-Shamie told Press Association he had lived on Langley Crescent since around 2021, while one recalled a baby also living at the address. One day he would be wearing the full gown, to the floor and the next jeans and pyjama bottoms.” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was ‘surprised’ by the attacker’s name. Speaking on LBC, Ms Mahmood was asked about the attacker’s name, Jihad Al-Shamie, which presenter Nick Ferrari translated as ‘struggle of the Syrian’. She said: “I was very surprised to discover that name myself. Actually, as a Muslim, I’ve never heard someone being called Jihad, but it is the name that he was born with – that has always been his name.” Officers arrested two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism following Al-Shamie’s actions. A major cordon remains in place on Middleton Road this morning, while officers also remain on Langley Crescent.
