Man was lucky to escape injury when he was hit by car after fight with sister’s ex partner

A man was lucky to escape serious injury when he was hit by a car after a fight with his sister’s former partner. Andrew Doig’s Ford Fiesta mounted the pavement at speed, striking the man who landed on the bonnet before falling to the ground. Doig had earlier claimed to be carrying a machete and a shotgun as he went to confront the man in Newton Drive, Newmains. He appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted charges of threatening or abusive behaviour and assault to injury and danger of life. Doig, 32, also admitted driving while over the drugs limit. The court heard he went to his ex-partner’s home in Newmains around 5pm on January 4. She saw he was under the influence and asked him to leave. Doig said he was going to see her brother and told her he had a machete and a shotgun with six bullets in his car. The woman phoned the victim to alert him and he went outside to meet Doig. Robbie McDougall, prosecuting, said: “There was a verbal confrontation that turned physical. “A window of the accused’s car was broken and he received an injury to his face. “The accused then reversed and drove up and down Newton Drive three times. “Each time he mounted the kerb and the man was forced to take evasive action. “Doig then drove towards Westwood Road and the man ran after him. Doig turned his car and drove at speed towards the victim, knocking him on to the bonnet before he fell on to the pavement. “The victim’s partner ran to assist him and the accused drove off.” The man was taken to hospital complaining of neck and back pain. He also had an injury to his knee. Doig also required hospital treatment. He told police Mr Kerr had stabbed him. Defence lawyer Alanah Campbell said her client, who admitted previous convictions, has had issues with substance abuse and his mental health. But she added: “He has been in custody since January and says that is the best thing to happen to him in years. It is helping him change his life.” Sheriff Michael Higgins deferred sentence until next month for background reports and remanded Doig in custody. The sheriff imposed a 10-year non-harassment order in relation to Doig’s ex-partner. *Don’t miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Sign up to our newsletters here .
