By Dorcas Ting KUCHING, Oct 27: A local man was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today for stealing three Hindu deity statues and several other brass worship items from a temple on Jalan Hospital last September. Thayalan, 56, pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali, with a court interpreter reading the charge aloud. He was accused of stealing several brass worship items, including chain lamps, brass trays, and three deity statues, from a temple along Jalan Hospital at around 8.30am on September 9. The charge was made under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a possible fine. According to case details, the temple caretaker noticed the missing items on the day of the theft and filed a police report. Acting on information, police arrested the suspect at an unnumbered house along Jalan Kampung Gita Laut at about 1.45pm on September 18. Investigations revealed that the accused had stolen the items with the intention of selling them to a scrap metal shop for cash. CCTV footage from the scrap metal premises confirmed the suspect’s presence, and a witness stated that the stolen items were stored in a bag carried by him. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng, while the accused appeared in court without legal representation. — DayakDaily
