The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has granted bail to Sokkanathan, father of a 19-year-old medical aspirant, who was arrested in Dindigul for producing fake certificates to secure a seat at Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital. Earlier this month, Dindigul District Crime Branch Police arrested the candidate and her parents for producing fake NEET scorecard and documents to secure admission to the medical college. The fraud was detected during admission process. According to the police, the candidate had scored 228 marks in NEET, and failed to secure a medical seat. In a desperate attempt to get a seat, the girl and her parents prepared a fake NEET scorecard stating that she scored 456 marks. Fake documents were also prepared stating that she was allotted a medical seat in the Dindigul college. The college authorities, suspecting the genuineness of the candidate’s NEET scorecard and certificates, sent them to the Directorate of Medical Education, Chennai, for verification, which revealed that they were fake. Based on a complaint lodged by the Dean of the medical college, the petitioner, Sokkanathan, his wife Vijaya Murugeswari and their daughter were arrested. Taking into consideration that there was no previous case pending against the petitioner, Justice S. Srimathy granted him bail. He was directed to report before the Dindigul District Crime Branch Police every day for one week and thereafter as and when required for interrogation.
