The Nkhunga First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced 39-year-old Solomon Chiutsi to three years in prison after he was found guilty of defrauding 40 people of K18.7 million by promising to help them secure government jobs. According to Nkhunga Police spokesperson Andrew Kamanga, Chiutsi had been claiming since March this year that he had connections with senior officials in the Ministry of Health and could assist people to get employed as health advisors and other medical roles, including hospital support staff. During the court proceedings, Chiutsi pleaded guilty and requested a lenient sentence, citing family responsibilities and claiming that the money he obtained had already been spent on gambling. However, Magistrate Owen Nyimbo, agreeing with the prosecution’s recommendation, ruled that a strict sentence was necessary and sentenced Chiutsi to three years in prison. Chiutsi hails from Chisenga Village, under Chief Mkukula in Dowa District.
