UDUPI: A 55-year-old man was found dead on the railway tracks at Indiranagar, Haleyangady, in what police suspect to be a case of suicide. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Mulki Police Station on Tuesday morning. Victim identified as resident of Karkala The deceased has been identified as Prabhakar Shetty (55), a resident of Bailur in Karkala taluk, Udupi district. Police sources said Shetty allegedly placed his head on the tracks before an approaching train ran over him. Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause that led to the tragic act. “Preliminary inquiries are ongoing to understand the circumstances that may have driven him to take this extreme step,” an investigating officer said. Police investigation underway Upon receiving information from locals, officers from the Mulki Police Station reached the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered, and an inquest is being carried out to establish further details. The police have also informed the family members of the deceased. Statements are being recorded to ascertain any possible financial, medical, or personal issues that might have contributed to the incident. Body shifted to Mulki mortuary Members of the local lifeguard team, identified as Dawood, Prasad, and Mahesh, assisted in retrieving the body from the tracks. The remains were later shifted to the Mulki Government Hospital mortuary in a lifeguard ambulance for post-mortem examination. The report from the medical examination is expected to shed more light on the time and manner of death. Community in shock Residents of Haleyangady and Bailur expressed shock over the incident, describing Prabhakar Shetty as a quiet individual who largely kept to himself. Local authorities have urged people to reach out for help in times of distress and reminded the public of available mental health and counselling services. The Mulki Police are continuing their probe to establish the sequence of events that led to the suicide. Officials have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
