Man airlifted to hospital in critical condition following horror Cork crash as gardai shut busy road

A young man is fighting for his life in hospital following a serious road traffic collision in Co Cork.

Gardai and emergency services responded following reports of a two-vehicle collision, which occurred on the N73 Mallow to Mitchelstown Road near Ballyvorisheen at approximately 7.30am on Wednesday morning.

Fire crews from Mallow and Kanturk were called to the scene along with the ambulance service and a man in his 20s was airlifted to Cork University Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, a man aged in his 30s, was conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

No other injuries were reported.

The N73 is closed at Ballyvorisheen, Mallow, pending an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions have been put in place. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the incident and have appealed for anyone with information to contact the authorities.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a two vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on the N73 near Mallow, Co. Cork this morning, Wednesday 17th September 2025 at approximately 7:30 am.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N73 between Mallow and Mitchelstown this morning between 7:15 and 8:15 am are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Gardaí can be contacted at Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

“Investigations are ongoing.
