Residents of the Balearic Islands, particularly Mallorcans, have emerged as Spain’s most avid travellers in the first half of 2025, according to the latest National Statistics Institute (INE) tourism survey.
Defying the national trend of a 5.2 per cent decline in trips compared to last year, Balearic residents increased their number of journeys by 3.7 per cent, along with Valencians (2.6 per cent), making them the only regions to report any growth. This increase goes to show the islands’ active travel culture, with locals going for both domestic and international adventures.
The data reveals that 87.8 per cent of the 81.2 million trips taken by Spaniards were within Spain, with Mallorcans leading in trip duration, averaging 4.41 days per journey. This enthusiasm for longer getaways reveals their commitment to exploring new horizons. While national travel numbers dipped 12 per cent severely compared to pre-pandemic 2019, Balearic residents surpassed their 2019 figures, a feat shared only with Murcia.
Mallorcans also topped per-person daily spending at €105.83, suggesting they are doing better than other regions of Spain and their willingness to invest in quality travel experiences. Whether exploring Spain’s diverse regions or taking that adventure abroad (17.3 per cent of their trips), their passion for travel appears undaunted by reported price hikes. Notably, intra-regional trips within the Balearics rose by 5.9 per cent, which indicates a strong appreciation for their own islands’ beauty.
The travel boom paints a positive picture for the Balearic economy and tourism sector, and puts the spotlight on Mallorcans as trendsetters in Spain’s travel landscape for 2025.
