Mallorca marches against cancer as thousands brave the rain for a cause

Despite relentless rain sweeping across Palma on Sunday October 26, the people of Mallorca turned out in force to show their solidarity at the 10th edition of Mallorca En Marcha, the island’s annual walk against cancer. The event, organised by the Balearic branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC Baleares), transformed the streets of the capital into a sea of pink as participants marched in support of patients, survivors, and families affected by the disease. The event’s organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude to the thousands of walkers who took part, posting: “We couldn’t be happier and more grateful for your participation. Today we have painted the streets of Palma pink to show support for people with cancer and their families.” Community spirit shines through the storm at the 10th edition of Mallorca En Marcha Umbrellas, ponchos, and bright pink t-shirts dominated the streets as runners and walkers set off through Palma’s historic centre. While the weather tested everyone’s endurance, the rain only seemed to amplify the community spirit, with participants smiling, cheering, and waving banners to raise awareness of cancer research and prevention. Supporters lined the route to applaud participants who pushed on despite the downpour — a fitting reflection of the event’s message of resilience and hope. Two main goals: research and prevention According to AECC Baleares, this year’s walk focused on two vital goals: raising funds to further cancer research and support patients and their families, and promoting healthy lifestyle habits through sport and solidarity. The initiative forms part of the association’s ongoing mission to encourage early detection, healthy living, and continuous funding for cancer research across the Balearic Islands. The event was supported by several key institutions, including Emaya Palma, IME Palma, and the Consell de Mallorca, with sponsorship from Quirónsalud and Avoris Travel. Collaboration also came from a wide network of local businesses, fitness groups, and volunteers, including Fisiosystem, La Voz de Tu Evento, and Manu Blanco. Local media also rallied behind the cause, with coverage and support from Diario de Mallorca, IB3, COPE Mallorca, Radio Balear FM, Europa FM Baleares, and Canal 4 Grup 4, among others. Corporate and social solidarity Dozens of local organisations took part, including ASIMA, which shared that “every step is a commitment to hope” in their message of support. The business community’s involvement underscored how deeply rooted the event has become in Mallorcan society – not only as a fundraiser but also as a celebration of unity and compassion. As the final walkers crossed the finish line under grey skies, spirits remained high. The event once again demonstrated Mallorca’s ability to come together in the face of adversity, showing that neither rain nor cold could dampen the collective fight against cancer.
