Mallorca legend Rafa Nadal serves up his favourite film as he and his wife smash Hong Kong

Mallorcan tennis legend Rafa Nadal has revealed his fondness for a film classic that is celebrating a quarter of a century since its release. It is Gladiator, the acclaimed historical epic directed by Ridley Scott, starring Oliver Reed, Russell Crowe, Richard Harris and Joaquin Phoenix which continues to captivate global audiences. ‘I love Gladiator. I've seen it many times. It inspires me,’ said the Mallorcan in an interview during the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open. The film, which was released in 2000, has established itself as a benchmark in the action and historical drama genre, and its relevance remains intact. Gladiator is currently available on Prime Video, allowing new and old generations to relive its powerful story of courage, honour and legacy, values that undoubtedly also characterise Rafa Nadal's career. Elite athletes often identify with stories of heroes who fight against unfavourable odds, who persevere despite setbacks, and who seek to leave a legacy. Epic narratives, with their protagonists embodying resilience and mental strength, can serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for athletes, reminding them of the importance of perseverance and passion in achieving their goals. The figure of Máximo, a warrior fighting for an ideal, can be a mirror for those who compete at the highest level. And, over the past few days Rafa Nadal has proved an inspiration in Hong Kong. Last Friday night was a showcase of elegance and solidarity when one of the most admired couples in Spanish sport made an appearance at an exclusive charity gala held in Hong Kong. Rafa Nadal and his wife Mery Perelló once again demonstrated that their commitment to social causes is accompanied by impeccable style that does not go unnoticed. The evening, organised jointly by the Spanish sportsman's foundation and the WEMP Foundation, had the main objective of formalising a strategic alliance between the two organisations to promote initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of children and young people globally. The event, dubbed ‘The Children Ball’, brought together numerous personalities from the social, business and sporting worlds, hosted jointly by Dr Adrián Cheng and the Spanish tennis player. As is customary in his public appearances, the Spanish sportsman had the unconditional support of his wife, who has not only proven to be his greatest pillar in difficult times, but also a prominent figure in her own right thanks to her natural elegance and impeccable taste in fashion. The Mallorcan, who recently gave birth to her second child, Miquel, just two months ago, surprised everyone with her recovery and her carefully studied style.
