For people who have never been to Pollensa and the port, apart from the historic natural beauty which has made it a global attraction for decades, it has become an epicentre for sports and activity holidays, not to mention cycling. More recently the likes of Tom Cruise and Richard Gere have fallen in love with the area and its beaches. And Agatha Christie also spent a great deal of time in the port. She first visited Puerto Pollensa for the first time in 1932, coming from the Middle East, and stayed at the Hotel Illa d’Or. This is one of the reasons Spain is renowned for its climate, Mediterranean cuisine, and active lifestyle. This is reflected in its high life expectancy of 83.2 years, the highest in the European Union. However, health is more than just longevity; factors such as air quality, access to green spaces, and opportunities for exercise also influence well-being. To identify which locations offer the best environment for promoting healthy living, ZAVA, a renowned online medical service specialising in weight loss consultations, analysed a range of environmental and lifestyle factors: from the number of parks, sports centres, aquatic facilities and walking routes, to air quality and the balance between healthy food outlets and fast food outlets and Pollensa has been ranked in second place. Teruel, the Aragonese town of Mudejar architecture and love, takes first place with an impressive score of 9.05 out of 10. This modest but impressive town has 475.36 parks and 825.27 aquatic spaces per 10,000 inhabitants, creating an environment where outdoor activities are not only encouraged but inevitable. In addition, it has more than 100 exercise spaces per 10,000 inhabitants and nearly 70 walking routes, making it a paradise for fitness enthusiasts. With an air quality index of only 26, Teruel combines clean air with abundant spaces to move, breathe and live life to the fullest. In second place, with a score of 8.99 out of 10, is Pollensa. This coastal town surprises with its numerous aquatic spaces: 1,548 per 10,000 inhabitants. Although the town has fewer parks and gyms than Teruel, its clean air (with an index of 17) and its balanced ratio of healthy to unhealthy food outlets make Pollensa a top destination for a healthy lifestyle by the sea. Lugo, in Galicia, shares third place with Orihuela; both achieved a score of 8.89 out of 10. Lugo impresses with 148.25 parks and 43.07 gyms per 10,000 people, offering a great combination of green spaces and places to exercise. In addition, with an air quality index of 19, it is one of the cleanest cities in Spain. For its part, Orihuela ranks first in terms of diversity of swimming venues, with 2,132.47 options per 10,000 inhabitants. Although it does not stand out as much for its walking routes, the overwhelming number of aquatic options make this town a unique wellness centre, especially for those who prefer swimming to walking.
