Malleswaram turns festive again for Happy Streets

Bengaluru — The iconic 8th Cross Road in Malleswaram came alive on Sunday morning as the fourth edition of Happy Streets transformed the neighbourhood into a bustling, car-free zone filled with music, dance, games and community activities. The event, aimed at promoting active lifestyles and reclaiming public spaces for people, saw enthusiastic participation from residents of all ages. A morning of joy and fitness The event began with a peaceful meditation session led by the Heartfulness Institute, followed by high-energy Zumba sessions conducted by Swingers Dance Inc. The stretch of 8th Cross turned into an open-air celebration where children and adults joined in activities like sketching, rangoli, tyre-rolling, hopscotch, and tug-of-war.Art and creativity were at the heart of the morning, with workshops by Ovya Art Academy and Rangavalli Arts Foundation drawing crowds. Families came together to paint, dance, and play — reminiscent of old Bengaluru’s street culture. Civic engagement and awareness Beyond entertainment, Happy Streets integrated civic learning and public health awareness into the festivities. The Indian Red Cross Society held CPR demonstrations, while a group named Reclaim Constitution printed and distributed copies of the Indian Constitution’s Preamble to promote civic participation.Volunteers also conducted surveys and discussions for an upcoming Malleswaram Art Deco Walk, inviting suggestions from residents to celebrate the area’s architectural heritage. Residents’ response Participants praised the event for its inclusive spirit and safe environment. Many parents expressed happiness over seeing their children play outdoors, away from screens. Senior citizens said it reminded them of Malleswaram’s old-world charm, when community and street life were vibrant. The event reflected growing public demand for such people-centric initiatives, encouraging authorities to continue hosting community gatherings that prioritise health, culture, and connection. Looking ahead With the success of this edition, organisers are planning to extend Happy Streets to other Bengaluru neighbourhoods. The initiative underscores how simple public events can transform urban spaces into shared zones of recreation and togetherness, even if just for a few hours each week.
