When the Chicago Bears host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, a familiar face will be on the opposing sidelines at Soldier Field.Former head coach Matt Eberflus will be making his Chicago return, roughly 10 months since being fired after a disastrous Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions. As fate would have it, the opposing offensive coordinator from that game will once again be going up against Eberflus, this time as the new head coach of his former team. It’s safe to say things didn’t end on the best terms when Eberflus was fired during his third season as the Bears’ head coach. Well before that final Week 13 game, Eberflus lost full trust from his locker room and the lack of support given to rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was well documented.
But, the past is the past and when Eberflus returns to Soldier Field this weekend, it doesn’t seem like there will be any lingering hard feelings.
No bad blood between Caleb Williams and Matt Eberflus
“It was good, obviously, being able to become a Chicago Bear,” Williams said on Wednesday. “He made that decision and obviously everybody else (in the front office) was in here and being able to make that decision, making me a Chicago Bear. So happy to be here and our time together wasn’t wasted. Obviously we didn’t win as much as we wanted, but we’re past that.”
Getting away from the 2024 season as a whole has been a main point of emphasis for new head coach Ben Johnson since taking over the position back in January. One thing that’s yet to change is the lack of winning, with the Bears out to an 0-2 start in 2025.While there’s no bad blood, there’s certainly an opportunity for the players in Chicago, particularly on the offensive side of the ball to send a statement with Eberflus on the opposite sideline. Falling to 0-3 would make things look even worse with that coach on the other team.
On the Cowboys’ side of things, Eberflus shared on Thursday while speaking with reporters that he “hasn’t thought about it” when asked what the reaction would be returning to Chicago. But, his experience with his former team and knowledge of his former players is something Dallas is utilizing.
“He knows the players. We brought him in and had him talk to the offensive staff about the players,” Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer explained. “He has great respect for a lot of those guys that were there.”
