This redevelopment forms part of a national programme to eliminate dormitory-style wards across mental health facilities, ensuring patients benefit from greater privacy, dignity, and improved therapeutic environments.

At Edward Street Hospital, all dormitory accommodation has been replaced with modern ensuite bedrooms and upgraded facilities. These enhancements are designed to support recovery while providing a safe, comfortable environment for both patients and staff.

Patients were temporarily transferred to Bushey Fields Hospital in Dudley in September 2023 to continue their care. All patients and staff from the Older Adult wards at Bushey Fields will relocate to Edward Street Hospital once it reopens.

An official opening ceremony will take place on Thursday 18 September 2025, when the Trust will welcome partners, staff, and members of the local community to celebrate this important milestone.

Chris Masikane, Chief Operating Officer at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are incredibly proud to have reached this milestone and are excited to welcome patients back to Edward Street Hospital. This major capital development is about creating a safe, modern, and therapeutic environment where older adults can receive the very best care, with dignity and privacy at the centre.”

Sophie Wray, Associate Director of Estates at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, also added: “We would particularly like to thank our partners who were involved in this project: IHP, our Principal Supply Chain Partner; Archus, our consultancy partner; and WT Partnership, our Cost Advisors. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making this transformation possible for our patients and their families.”

Edward Street Hospital’s reopening in October 2025 marks a new chapter in specialist mental health support for older adults across Sandwell and the wider Black Country community.
