With the aim to bring together climate experts from across the Global South for a practical climate action plan, India will host the inaugural edition of Mumbai Climate Week in February 2026. “The event will bring together the best minds from across the Global South to find practical solutions for our climate challenges. This platform will help developing nations work together and make their voices heard on the global stage,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. “Mumbai Climate Week will be India’s first dedicated, citizen-led platform focussed on speeding up climate action,” he said further, adding that more than 30 countries were expected to send their representatives for participation. “They will come to Mumbai to create a practical climate action plan, working with city leaders, State Chief Ministers, civil society groups, corporates, students, and young people.” A request has been sent to the Prime Minister to inaugurate it. Elaborating on the idea behind the concept, Shishir Joshi, founder and CEO of Project Mumbai which is organising the event along with Maharashtra Government, said, “Globally, we have seen this phenomenon in the Global North. For example, New York has been hosting it in September every year. London has been hosting the London Action Week in July. In these events though, Global North leaders lead these conversations. We see that the climate action has been happening in Global South. So, we thought it was important to highlight India’s role and leadership in the Global South in climate action. That was the idea behind curating the Mumbai Climate Week.” “The inaugural edition of Mumbai Climate Week will focus on three connected themes: food systems, energy transition, and urban resilience. Each theme will be examined through the lenses of justice, innovation, and funding. This ensures that the MCW platform addresses both climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Importantly, the platform will bring together not just policymakers and experts, but also give a voice to citizens and grassroots initiatives. Topics such as mental health, art, spirituality, sports, and cinema will be included in the week’s activities. A climate-focussed food festival is also being planned as part of public engagement,” he added. The Climate Group (hosts of New York Climate Week), India Climate Collaborative, WRI, Eversource, UNICEF, are among the organisations which have partnered with the Maharashtra Government and Project Mumbai for the event.
