Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pinaki Misra’s wedding reception in West Bengal’s Nadia district has triggered a political controversy, with the BJP accusing the couple of using government property for a private event. The public reception, held Saturday evening at the Karimpur Regulated Market Ground, was attended by nearly 6,000 guests, including ministers, MLAs, party workers, and local residents. The couple had earlier tied the knot in Germany a few months ago. BJP Alleges Use of Government Property Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Krishanu Singha alleged that government facilities were used for the grand celebration, causing inconvenience to locals. “Many blessings to you, @MahuaMoitra. But there is one question — more than 6,000 people were invited to the dinner party. The entire ground has been wrapped with pandals and lighting at a cost of crores. Very good. Everyone has the right to rejoice,” Singha said in a post on social media. He also shared an image of the invitation card showing the venue as the Karimpur Regulated Market Football Ground and questioned why permission was granted for a private function when local religious gatherings had earlier been denied. “For the past few years, the ground authorities have not given permission for any religious events such as kirtan or Baul fairs. Why?” he asked. Singha further claimed that bus services were disrupted due to the event and accused the administration of bias. “How can the administration provide a field that is not allowed to be used for public purposes for the wedding of an MP?” he wrote. TMC Calls Allegations ‘Cheap Politics’ Trinamool Congress leaders rejected the BJP’s claims, calling them “politically motivated.” “Such below-the-belt attacks show the bankruptcy of the BJP. They are doing cheap politics over a marriage reception,” said TMC MLA Rukbanur Rahman, who attended the event. Rahman said the couple had obtained all necessary permissions and personally funded the celebration. “Our MP’s husband, Pinaki Misra, was very cordial with guests. Around 6,000 people attended, including Minister Ujjal Biswas, several MLAs, and party workers. We all wished them the very best,” he said.
