Mahama departs for 80th UN General Assembly in New York

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to depart Accra on Saturday, September 20, for the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Meeting in New York.

The President is leading Ghana’s delegation to participate in the high-level week of the 80th Session of the UNGA from September 22 to 30, 2025, in New York.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, speaking at a press conference at the Presidency in Accra, said the President was scheduled to address the UNGA on Thursday, September 25, at the UN Headquarters in New York, on the theme: “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”

The Minister said President Mahama would make history as the first Ghanaian President to return to address the United Nations after leaving office for eight years and returning again.

He said as part of his engagements while in New York, President Mahama would participate in several high-level meetings and side events.

Ablakwa said notably, President Mahama, in his capacity as African Union Champion for African Financial Institutions, would host a side event on Africa’s financial sovereignty on Wednesday, September 24.

This event, the Minister said, would bring together Heads of State and Government, Finance Ministers, and representatives of the African Union and other institutions to reassert Africa’s financial sovereignty, build momentum for the establishment and effective operationalisation of AU financial institutions, and seek reforms in the global financial architecture.

He noted that, given President Mahama’s role as the AU Champion for Reparatory Justice for Africans and people of African descent, and Ghana’s leadership in advocating for reparative justice and reforms, Ghana would co-host a side event with the President of Senegal on Thursday, September 25.

Ablakwa said President Mahama was also scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings with his counterparts to discuss issues of mutual interest.
