Macomb County to Surge Ahead with Over $88 Million in Road Improvements for 2026 Following 2025 Milestones

Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel and representatives from the Macomb Department of Roads (MCDR) have laid out the blueprint for the county's transportation future, revealing a significant leap in 2025 with over $73 million in road improvements, and an even more ambitious $88 million plan for 2026. With the support of additional state funding, the county's infrastructure is receiving a strategic facelift designed to bolster safety and keep up with regional growth. The MCDR is tasked with bringing nearly 1,700 miles of roadways and over 200 bridges up to speed, a challenge that comes with a hefty price tag of an estimated $2.6 billion. According to the Macomb Department of Roads, the recent uptick in funding will not magically overhaul every road and bridge, but the department is optimistic that the county will witness considerable upgrades. As stated on the website, "While the additional funding won’t fix every road and bridge overnight, we anticipate that we will be able to make substantial improvements to the overall condition of our roads and bridges in the foreseeable future." 2025 saw the completion of 47 asphalt resurfacing and concrete pavement repair projects, among various other undertakings designed to enhance the county's traffic network. Some of the significant undertakings from the past year included ambitious projects on 10 Mile Road, Garfield Road, and 14 Mile Road, each comprising extensive rehabilitation or reconstruction that included improvements for drainage, road surfaces, and traffic management equipment. This reinvestment in Macomb's thoroughfares is due, in part, to the tactical deployment of its advanced traffic network and an increased adaptation of fiber optic technology, per insights from the county's roads department. Looking to the horizon, the MCDR is not resting on its 2025 laurels; instead, it is preparing for over $88 million in infrastructure investments for 2026. "The additional funding will allow the Department of Roads to bolster our existing programs and the services we provide to the communities we serve," MCDR Director Bryan Santo conveyed per the Macomb Department of Roads. The public is encouraged to remain informed on ongoing and upcoming projects by signing up for real-time lane closures and construction updates online, where a full list of 2025 accomplishments and 2026 proposals is made available alongside the State of Macomb County Roads presentation.
