M6 closed to traffic in Cumbria after diesel spillage as diversion route put in place

The M6 motorway is closed in Cumbria tonight (Wednesday, October 1) for emergency carriageway repairs. The southbound carriageway is shut to traffic between Junction 39 and Junction 38 (Tebay) following a diesel spillage earlier today. A closure will remain in place overnight into Thursday. A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M6 in Cumbria is closed southbound between J39 (Shap) and J38 (Tebay) for emergency resurfacing due to a diesel spillage on the carriageway. Never miss a story with the MEN’s daily Catch Up newsletter – get it in your inbox by signing up here “Resurfacing works will take place overnight.” Inrix, the traffic data company, said: “M6 Southbound closed due to emergency resurfacing repairs and earlier spillage of diesel on the road between J39 B6261 (Shap) and J38 A685 (Tebay).” A National Highways traffic diversion route is in place. Motorists are being urged to follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol: Exit the M6 at J39 and turn right onto the B6261 link road to access the A6. At Shap Toll Bar junction turn left onto the A6 southbound. In Kendal, follow the A6 (Wildman Street and Stramongate). Join the A65 and follow onto Aynam Road and continue to the roundabout at Romney Road. Join our Traffic and Travel WhatsApp group HERE Take the third exit from roundabout signed Lancaster A6 (M6). At Romney Road traffic signals, turn left onto the A6 southbound. South of Kendal, take the first roundabout exit onto the A591 southbound. Follow A591 and A590 to re-join the M6 at J36
