“Ankles” singer and Boygenius band member Lucy Dacus is making her thoughts on anti-trans jokes very clear. During a recent interview with Vulture, the queer musician, 30, was asked to describe “something that is not funny” to her. The question was posed as one of 25 obscure questions designed by stand-up comedian Maria Bamford to “unearth surprising truths” about the respondents. Yet Dacus’s response to the question will be far from surprising to most of her fans, who know her as a straight-talking, queer-defending spokesperson for the LGBTQ+ community. “There’s so much comedy that’s not funny. I don’t go to comedy that often, but I would say 80 per cent of the time I do, I am booing from the crowd,” Dacus said. “I think that it’s possible to be funny and not make fun of disabled people or non-white people or trans people. These comedians are lazy — like really f**king lazy, and it’s not funny.” She continued: “I don’t like when people are like, ‘Oh, come on, have a good sense of humor.’ I’m like, ‘No. Have a better sense of humour. This is stupid.’” A number of high-profile comedians including Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais and Bill Burr have repeatedly used trans people as the butt of their jokes in stand-up routines. In 2021, a group of Netflix employees walked out of the streamers’ office in Los Angeles in protest against the corporation giving Chappelle a platform for his comedy special The Closer, which featured jokes about the trans community. Other comedians, including Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho, Mae Martin, James Acaster, and Michelle Buteau have spoken out against their industry mates who “punch down” against trans people. Lucy Dacus, who is in a relationship with her Boygenius bandmate Julien Baker, does not mince her words when speaking out for the wider LGBTQ+ community, and is known for aligning her words with actions. Over recent months, Dacus, a marriage officiant, officiated 154 queer weddings during her Forever is a Feeling Tour in response to growing concerns that equal marriage rights could be reversed under Donald Trump’s administration. Posting on Instagram following the end of the tour earlier this month, Dacus wrote: “Maybe some people got to see their first gay wedding and noticed the world did not crumble under their feet lol. “But sincerely, doing these weddings has been a huge honor. Can’t believe that so many of you were willing to share your Big Day with the rest of us. I hope every single one of you never experiences a bad day for the rest of your life.” She added: “And f**k the state for continually toying around with the idea of revoking marriage equality.” Earlier this year, she donated thousands of dollars to trans people via GoFundMe in response to Trump’s continued attempts to strip back trans rights in the US.Share your thoughts!
