Louisiana State Police are emphasizing safety for Halloween and have released guidelines to help families celebrate responsibly. According to a statement from the Louisiana State Police, participants are encouraged to stay visible after dark by using flashlights, glow sticks, or reflective tape on costumes. The advisory also includes recommendations for safe costume choices, such as avoiding masks that obstruct vision or breathing and choosing well-fitted outfits to prevent tripping. Troopers advise that children travel in groups, with younger ones accompanied by an adult, and to never enter homes or vehicles without permission. Families are urged to plan routes through well-lit areas with sidewalks, or if walking on roads, to stay on the left side facing traffic. Children should know emergency contact information, and younger children should have it attached to their clothing. Motorists are reminded to drive carefully due to increased pedestrian activity. Drivers should remain alert, use headlights, and reduce speed to allow more time to react to pedestrians. Parents are also advised to inspect all collected treats before consumption. For adults attending Halloween events, troopers stress the importance of avoiding impaired driving. They recommend using designated drivers, taxis, or ride-share services. Additionally, state law prohibits registered sex offenders from participating in trick-or-treating, and the Louisiana Sex Offender and Child Predator Registry is available for parents to verify local information.
