Looks Like Congress Could Finally Be Getting Serious About Violent ‘Radical Left’ Networks

House Republicans have plenty of strategies to expose far-left agitator groups to the world if they are serious about their proposal to form a committee investigating them, conservative policy experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Dozens of lawmakers, led by Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, are pushing to create the select committee in the wake of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s Sept. 10 assassination in Utah, outlining the request in a letter the day after. The letter mentions a 2012 shooting targeting the Family Research Council, violent anti-fascist or “Antifa” rioters and the 2017 shooting targeting Republicans at a congressional baseball practice as the reasons for lawmakers to take more aggressive action. The committee, if it becomes reality, would have subpoena power to probe “the money, influence, and power behind the radical left’s assault on America and the rule of law,” the Republicans’ letter says, creating the possibility of criminal penalties if individuals refuse to testify and provide information. This could allow lawmakers to put the spotlight on powerful organizations suspected of driving violent leftist radicalism in recent years, the heads of conservative watchdog groups told the DCNF.

“If everybody in Seattle’s Antifa groups disappeared this afternoon or was, you know, locked up into jail this afternoon, there would be more foot soldiers [coming] to Seattle,” Capital Research Center President Scott Walter said. “That’s just the way that works.”

“For the most radical types, they tend to be … little loosely organized splinter groups coming off of bigger groups,” Walter said.

“If this committee does its job, it won’t just restore faith in government, it will finally shine light on the forces driving political extremism that have been ignored for far too long,” New Tolerance Campaign President Chad Banghart told the DCNF.

Rep. Roy elaborated on his goals for the prospective committee on Wednesday, calling out immigration-related nonprofits and criminal justice officials backed by left-wing megadonor George Soros.

“There’s a very concerted, organized effort on the left that is very apparent, and we bore the brunt of it in Texas with open borders with dollars that were flowing very specifically and clearly through [non-governmental organizations] to move people into our country who were dangerous and who harm Texans,” Roy told reporters on Capitol Hill. “Same thing with the criminal stuff.”

“They’re literally telling them what to do and how to issue … light sentences and put people back on the streets,” Roy said.

The letter Roy co-authored says members of Congress with law enforcement backgrounds should head the select committee if it goes forward.

“What I’m saying is the American people need to know the organization of the left,” Roy said Wednesday.

Following The Money

One of the committee’s top priorities should be pulling back the curtain on fiscal sponsorships, a legal framework in which some tax-exempt leftist groups fund smaller non-exempt organizations that do not have to publicly disclose their finances, the experts told the DCNF.

For example, the Tides Center, an offshoot of the leftist Tides Foundation, is the fiscal sponsor of a pro-Palestinian legal group that helps activists avoid arrest and jail over protests. The center reported $233,730,257 in revenue and $307,289,944 in expenses in its latest tax filing in 2023.

The People’s Forum, a Marxist group that organizes protests across the country, offers fiscal sponsorships on its website. Therefore, the People’s Forum could be funding “tons of smaller groups under their organization worth looking into,” Banghart said.

The left-wing Alliance for Global Justice lost business with several financial processing companies for being the fiscal sponsor of Samidoun, a pro-Iran organization under federal sanctions for funding terrorism, Walter noted. “Alliance for Global Justice was one of the worst of these, and … they’ve really taken hits,” Walter said.

The Tides Foundation, People’s Forum and Alliance for Global Justice did not respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.

“Unfortunately there isn’t enough time in the legislative session, but there are plenty of large organizations that [lawmakers] could start making an example out of,” Banghart said.

A Capital Research Center report released on Wednesday found that the Open Society Foundations, founded by George Soros, gave $80 million to “groups tied to terrorism or extremist violence,” including ones providing material or ideological support to Antifa protesters arrested in the 2023 “Stop Cop City” riots in Atlanta, Georgia.

“The Open Society Foundations does not fund terrorism. Our activities are peaceful and lawful, and our grantees are expected to abide by human rights principles and be in compliance with the law,” the group previously told the DCNF. “Our work is solely dedicated to strengthening American democracy and upholding the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the US Constitution.”

President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday his administration would treat the Antifa movement as a “major terrorist organization.” The Trump administration has also begun investigating leftist groups for possible connections to Kirk’s Sept. 10 murder, according to multiple reports.

“Left-wing organizations have fueled violent riots, organized attacks against law enforcement officers, coordinated illegal doxing campaigns, arranged drop points for weapons and riot materials, and more,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told the DCNF. “The Trump Administration will get to the bottom of this vast network inciting violence in American communities. The Trump Administration will get to the bottom of those committing criminal acts and hold them accountable.”

Common Enemy

Walter and Banghart both said Republicans should not follow the path of the House Select Committee on Jan. 6 under former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, who excluded all members of the opposing political party from the committee except for two anti-Trump Republicans.

“This time must be different,” Banghart said. “This committee must be bipartisan and actually work to expose the radical networks and money fueling America’s intolerant left.”

“There is a path forward,” Banghart said, mentioning the handful of House Democrats seen attending a Sept. 15 vigil for Kirk and how they could serve on the committee. “Why? Because they showed that they could demonstrate the seriousness this very moment demanded.”

Another Capital Research Center report in November identified 150 advocacy groups, including both left-wing and white supremacist groups, as “pro-terrorism” based on how they cheered on Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of Israel or other violence. These antisemitic trends could provide another way to attract more Democrats to Roy’s investigative vision.

“We should all be able to say that massacring large numbers of Jews is a bad thing, and there are some folks who are not left-wing who are mixed up in that,” Walter told the DCNF.

“This cannot be about partisan point-scoring,” Banghart said. “It must be about whether Americans of all stripes can have confidence that violent actors or networks, whether they wear masks in the streets or hold powerful positions in influential institutions will face accountability. If Democrat lawmakers get honest, they should welcome this committee and its associated work.”
